Buddhist Idea of Beauty
As the main tenet of Buddhism is "suffering", "impermanence" and "no soul", many have the misconception that it has a pessimistic outlook and is devoid of any kind of aesthetic appreciation. Although this may at first appear to be very convincing, they are in fact far from the truth and are no more than mistaken generalizations. The primary aesthetic concept at the heart of Buddhist culture is the aspiration of leading a holy life. In Buddhism, beauty is not for beauty's sake. It has been viewed as an incentive for those who aspire to the holy life. The Buddhist concept of aesthetic is a beauty of things that are imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete. The cultivation of the right attitude to aesthetic is very important. A beautiful object itself is not goodness or rightness per se. Buddhism advocates aesthetic experience to a higher mode of living; it should be instrumental for moral development. Thus it is the distortion of perception that has to be rid of by perceiving objects as impermanent, unsatisfactory, repulsive and non-substantial. The world is full of beauty in a very spiritual and an abstract sense, but it is the man himself who defiles and destroys that beauty by trying to possess it. Thus Buddha's advice is to get detached from the apparent beauty of the external world that pleases the physical eyes, and to cultivate non-attachment to them, which would result in man himself realizing the beauty within his own mind. This is the moral or spiritual and inward beauty. Hence, Buddhism denounces sensualism and appreciates natural beauty. In order to fulfill one’s purpose, or in order for an object to fulfill its purpose, one must be non-dual in nature; he/she/it must achieve non-duality. Non-duality comes from both essence and being, along with everything else. The Buddhist and Western ideals for beauty differ greatly.     As an expressive compilation of all beliefs of Buddhism, Wesak incorporates all it means to be a Buddhist: the Three Jewels, the Four Noble Truths, and the Eightfold path. The commemorating festival of the birth, enlightenment and death of Buddha employs ritual practices to outwardly express and inwardly contemplate their commitment and yearning to reach enlightenment. In expression of the 3 Jewels, adherents kneel and bow 3 times a day, taking the 3 refugees “I take refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha”. Puja is the act of showing reverence to a ‘god’ like creature, but because Buddhists do not worship the Buddha himself, concentration goes to connecting to his spiritual wisdom and to one’s self, as communicated in the Dharma: “Without morning meditation each day, I cannot find a sense of contentedness within myself” - Ketut Sandhiartha. As prayer, Puja is portrayed through communal chanting, individual meditation and devotional offerings to a symbol of Buddha. These offerings themselves also express Buddhist beliefs, with the example of gifts of incense symbolising both the spreading of ‘the fragrance of pure moral conduct’ as well as burning symbolising impermanence. The ‘Bathing of the Buddha, A Mahayana ritual, whereby Buddhists pour water over a statue of the Buddha, purifies the mind from inner thoughts, allowing internal balance. The four noble truths is the knowledge of the unsatisfactory nature of life, which leads to suffering (dukkha). Through reflection and prostration before images of Buddha, these truths, that dukkha exists due to impermanence (anicca), with the only release being Nirvana (the overcoming of desire), are comprehended properly, giving purpose and direction in life. During Wesak, the Eightfold path is reaffirmed as the way to reach Nirvana, with adherents aiming to correct their lives to imitate the 8 laws. Buddhism began about 2,500 years ago in India when Siddhartha Gautama, a wealthy prince, became dissatisfied with his lavish lifestyle ( in class).     The first Noble Truth is that existence is suffering. Expounded, this tenet holds that nothing in our existence is ultimately satisfying and so we will always be searching for something to assuage our suffering. The second Noble Truth is that suffering is caused by craving or “grasping” as it is often translated from the original texts. This belief states that humans inherently tend to try to hold on to things (sensations, thoughts, actions, etc.) which provide us pleasure while, at the same time, humans also inherently tend to chase away things which cause us pain. The third Noble Truth is that humans can bring about the cessation of suffering by bringing about the cessation of craving. By following a certain set of prescribed beliefs and behaviors, some mental and some physical or verbal, one can force oneself to stop craving things and thus to stop suffering as a result of craving. The fourth and final Noble Truth is that the Eightfold Path is a general summary of the method by which a human can stop craving and thus stop suffering. It is not necessary to expound upon that exact method in this essay, although knowing that Buddhists believe that the Eightfold Path was set forth by the Buddha will be helpful.
