Descartes talked about the true and the false, and how we make mistakes in Meditation Four. Descartes believed that error as such is not something real that depends upon God, but rather is merely a defect. And thus there is no need to account for my errors by positing a faculty given to me by God for this purpose(546). He thought that the reason why we make mistakes is that the faculty of judging the truth, which we got from God, is not infinite(546). When Descartes focused more closely on more closely on himself and inquired into the nature of his errors, he noted that errors depend on the simultaneous concurrence of two causes: intellect and will(547). He didn’t believe that God ought to have given us a greater faculty of knowing than he did(547). So we cannot make no mistakes like God. Then Descartes raised a question that can he complain that the will or free choice he have received from God is insufficiently ample or perfect(547). After using paragraphs talking about it, Descartes perceived that the power of willing is not the cause of his errors, for it is most ample as well as perfect in its kind(548). This idea is similar to Augustine’s ides in On Free Choice of the Will. Then he thought if he held off from making a judgment when he do not perceive what is true with sufficient clarity and distinctness, it is cleat that he was acting properly and not committing an error(548). In the end, he said he would indeed attain it if only he paid enough attention to all the things that he perfectly understand, and separate them off from the rest, which he apprehended more confusedly and more obscurely(549).…
The Zen gardens appear as perfect representations of Buddhism’s “middle way.” Aesthetically pleasing to the eye, they display symmetry and diverse linear movement, yet unembellished with a limited color palate, permitting minimal mental distraction. Consequently, if the goal of Zen Buddhism is a clear mind and calm body, then the gardens pictured on the website are an exemplary space for the Zen Buddhist. However, when the gardens are inaccessible to the Zen Buddhist, koans may be more practical. Although described as illogical, the koans seem more like unconventional riddles created to bend and reform the students understanding and perception of life. Technically, by learning abstract, philosophical responses to these riddles, the Buddhist…
I never thought how interesting it would be to visit a different place of worship besides Christianity. Since the day I was born I’ve been a Christian and whatever anyone else believes in is wrong and that they are going to hell if they don’t believe in Christianity. About 3 years ago I visited the International Buddhist Progress Society a Buddhist temple in Naperville. Buddhism from what I learned looks more like a way of life or guidelines to it rather than a religion. Buddhism tells you how you could live life better but doesn’t scare you with the prospect of hell instead you live with ignorance. My own history with Christianity still made me doubt or fear the conquences of going to this temple. Part of me believed that I be punished by…
The overwhelming sense of tranquility and guidance that this establishment exhibits through the teaching of Buddhism has changed my life forever. The peaceful mannerisms are definitely what drew me in first. I was also drawn to the lotus flowers in particular, even before my trip to the temple. I noticed these influential deities on top of several lotus flowers. During my guided tour to the main shrine, I learned that lotus flowers, which grow through muddy waters, bloom above the murk and is purified and renewed. Like Christianity, you can be saved and give your life to Jesus and too be renewed. I am drawn to this religion simply of that justification alone. To change your life for the better and restore a healthy more peaceful future is what draws me to Buddhism. I feel I will incorporate more of their lifestyle and ways into my life now due to what I have learned in this class and my visit to the temple. (word count:…
