Creating and implementing effective lessons for a literacy learner who is struggling with reading and writing takes much effort and appropriate resources. Throughout the Literacy Development course, I have gained much insight and resources that have become valuable tools in addressing students’ literacy needs. In my own education, the reading activities that have had the most effect on my reading have varied. During my primary years, the strategies that we now call direct reading instruction helped build the foundational comprehension and vocabulary skills needed for reading more complex texts in college. While reading, I use context clues to try and understand any unknown vocabulary words. If this strategy does not work, I use my computer to look up synonyms for the word and re-read the sentence by replacing it with a word I understand. It was a hot August morning in 2011 as my mom dropped me off for my first day at a new school. I was an anxious sixth grader and was uneasy at the thought of being the new girl. Not only was I attending a new school, but I was transitioning from a public to private school, where I had no friends. Now, as a junior in high school, I realize that becoming familiar to a new school was one of the hardest adjustments I would ever have to make because of the many ways it contrasted from a public school. Becoming familiar in a new area of life is considered becoming literate. I was unsure how long it would take me to really know the reading levels of my students and what I could do to help aid their reading, vocabulary, and writing skills. In comparison, when students are reading with a teacher they are more nerves and more likely to make mistakes when reading. Maisinger, Schwanenflugel, Bradley, and Stahl (2004) in their study concluded when students are given the opportunity to participate in partner reading they have higher self confidence based on the positive feedback they receive from their partner. The research also measured students ability to stay on task when given the responsibility of reading with a selective partner. Students did follow directions and worked according to the given instruction (pp. 134- 137). Helping students improve their fluency is helping them over come those challenging words they continue to struggle with. Students also need to build confidence when they are reading to avoid making mistakes when they are reading. They need to have a sense of confidence when they read to someone else, and by hearing how their partner read aloud will allow readers to have an reading expectation from someone their age. The study did not mentioned students with learning disabilies or ELL, but this can be adaptable to them by placing them with students who are closer to their reading level and not their grade reading level. The study making the connection of improving fluency with the use of peer assistance with help the four students participating in the literacy intervention by assisting the person who is reading.
