In the East, people feared what they did not understand. People suffered from different forces, because they didn’t understand them and were told to make the forces more personable and to pay homage to them. The appropriate responses were to make sacrifices and/or rituals.…
In this paper I discuss what point Horace Miner was trying to make is his paper titled "Body Ritual among the Nacirema". Horace’s paper is about America but in the perspective that America is a tribe of third world country or such. I go through the individual topics, which mostly make fun of American’s vanity, and I describe what he is really talking about. I try to summaries Horace’s paper and put it in “American” terms.…
Horace Miner was attempting to illustrate a civilization that is similar to ours, who become victims of their culture. In this article I could see how rituals and beliefs could destroy a civilization. The Nacirema did unthinkable things to each other and to themselves they showed us how we can be our greatest and worst critic. Americans try to change themselves to meet a certain standard that we have created. We are not confident in who we are, so we start picking at the flaws we see in ourselves, that we think others see as well. Mr. Miner pointed out that there were certain rituals that could make you lose or gain weight; they also have some that are to enhance a woman’s bodily features. Today some of those “rituals” would be considered normal…
This article written by, Horace Miner, was my first read in where I was shocked to discover such barbaric rituals from other areas of life. I took the time to re-read this article several times. I have learned of many different cultures in where people do things that seem out of the ordinary; however the beliefs and practices of the Nacirema people just seem outlandish.…
On August 17, 2017 a category 3 hurricane, hit Houston, Texas. The hurricane flooded up to 7 feet (still rising) affecting the citizen’s homes and families. In the article “Fire Ants Are Yet Another Hazard in Houston’s Flooded Streets” talks about another kind of danger in Houston, fire ants. Fire ants usually inhabit in South Africa and the wetlands of Brazil. They have a water resistant fabric layer that can withstand water. Before Hurricane Harvey they hid in an underground tunnel system. When the flooding began the fire ants were able to link their claws and cling to one another, floating in massive rafts following the currents. After a while the bottom hoard of ants switch places with the top to avoid drowning. The ants were able to drift…
Bedouins believe in ‘Hasset’ which means the evil eye and they take this very seriously. They believe children are very vulnerable and someone might cast an eye of harm to them. Protective amulets were attached to children’s clothing so they are not be targeted. Another Bedouin tradition is that they slaughter animals such as a Goat or a Sheep when a child is born and they call this ritual ‘Foo-ela’. The Bedouins that are of southern…
The first stage is when the boys are removed from their mothers and are put in a men’s cult. In the first stage a crowd of men take the boys in beside a river. A war leader picks out a sharp stick and sticks it deep inside the boy’s nostrils until he bleeds into a stream. Then an older man tells all the boys that they have to copulate with them orally so they can grow. Several elders say that boys are unable to mature into men unless they ingest semen. In the second stage the boys continue to take in as much semen as possible. The second stage has no great significant difference from the first initiation other than the reward that is given to the boys from the food taboo.…
In the movie Antz, there were a variety of types of governments shown. The main one demonstrated by General Mandible, was fascism or also known as nazism. General Mandible uses his army to make the other ants in the colony behave. There are many different situations shown in this movie to prove that General Mandible uses Fascism or Nazism in this movie. Whereas, on the other hand, Z wants a direct democracy. He wants everyone to say what they have to say and treats everyone evenly. The first reason showing that General Mandible is using a fascism or nazism is that he does not care about every individual ant; he only cares about his colony. He does not care about what any ant has to say and whatever he says, that is what is going to happen. Whereas Z says that everyone should speak out. Also everyone is the same. In the movie, Z says that everyone should think for themselves and that. There are also many other places where General Mandible demonstrates a Nazism or a fascism type of government is that he imprisoned people when they did not so anything wrong. An example of this was when Z ran away and General Mandible imprisoned Weaver. Since Weaver did not do anything wrong, General Mandible should not have been allowed is imprison him. Z on the other hand wants the colony to be run as a democracy. As the colony was making a ladder, Z says that we are a colony, implying that everyone is just as important to one another. Also in the end when everyone gets up safely, he says that we did it, not I did it. There were many other types of governments shown in this movie as well but these two showed the major two in the movie. Even though Z did not use the direct democracy, it is what he wanted to be used and it is what would have been used if Z had been the leader.…
1. Plot: Garson Poole is the owner of Tri-Plan Electronics. One day, he wakes up in a hospital to find out that he lost his hand during a squib accident. What is worse is that he is told by the doctors that he is a human-appearing organic robot, something called an Electric Ant. Then he learns from a futuristic computer that his subjective reality is being fed from micro-punched reality tape in his chest cavity. He conducts experiments on himself, first by glazing over a couple of holes and then punching new holes to see what effect this has on his reality. The more he starts to know and understand about his reality, he gets even more and more curious about what would happen when he cuts the tape. And when he does, it becomes too late.…
The baseball bat was broken when it was bought by the plaintiff. The plaintiff should return the baseball bat and have his money refunded to him. When the plaintiff bought the baseball bat from the defendant the baseball bat was already broken because as soon as the defendant used the bat to play baseball, the bat shattered into a million pieces. Shattering into a million pieces certainly violates the implied warranty of merchantability under the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC 2-314). No Industria De Calcados Martini Ltda. v. Maxwell Shoe Co., 36 Mass. App. Ct. 268 (Mass. App. Ct. 1994) INDUSTRIA DE CALCADOS MARTINI LTDA. v. MAXWELL SHOE CO., INC. No. 92-P-1322 APPEALS COURT OF MASSACHUSETTS 36 Mass. App. Ct. 268; 630 N.E.2d 299; 1994 Mass. App. LEXIS 274; 23 U.C.C. Rep. Serv. 2d (Callaghan) 89 December 20, 1993, Argued March 21, 1994, Decided. Also, there’s a case what case ? that expounded upon this issue and told us that a baseball bat can’t crack when it’s for its intended purpose. Otherwise, the store has to refund the to the plaintiff. Dudzik v. Klein's All Sports, 158 Misc. 2d 72 (N.Y. J. Ct. 1993) Laurence Dudzik et al., Plaintiffs, v. Klein's All Sports, Defendant. SC# 92-390 JUSTICE COURT OF NEW YORK, TOWN OF COLONIE, ALBANY COUNTY 158 Misc. 2d 72; 600 N.Y.S.2d 1013; 1993 N.Y Misc. LEXIS 272; 21 U.C.C. Rep. Serv. 2d (Callaghan) 592 June 9, 1993, Decided. The information that can be clearly drawn from these cases is if a plaintiff buys a baseball bat, the said bat must be in the condition that the was represented by the seller. The bat must be in marketable condition so that the implied warranty from the seller to the buyer must be…
Medicine sticks are one of the more fascinating artifacts and tools used by Native Americans. Brave warriors use the medicine stick for important reasons. Despite pleading to the villagers to stop, they disregarded Tessie's opinion and they commit a grave act, showing they do not even care for the people they have been living with for so many years and would commit heinous acts, inflicting pain upon their own family. Furthermore, the villagers simply follow what they recall from the past about traditions," Although the villagers had forgotten the ritual and lost the original black box, they still remembered to use stones." The villagers do not fully grasp the ideologies present behind the traditions, implying that rather than contemplating on the purpose of the ritual, they form arbitrary memories of what the traditions in the past allegedly look like. The formation of these bizarre rituals has no reasoning presented behind them, therefore the villagers cause pain upon themselves through the mindless actions of the rituals that they create in an attempt to follow old traditions. The bizarre traditions the villagers follow leads to the infliction of pain towards the others by blindly following old traditions rather than contemplating upon…
In his article, Geertz begins illustrating how in the year 1958, him and his wife visited a village in order to do anthropological work. Because they were outsiders, they were seen as “nonpersons, specters, invisible men” (Geertz 1972:412). After the couple observes a cockfight, the police raid the area, causing people to race away because it is an illegal event. The couple follows the public’s lead and runs away, seeking refuge with two locals. Police found them, questioning what they were doing there and the local Balinese man defends them. After this event, everybody heard what Geertz and his wife has done, and they received an outpour of attention and openness (1972:416). Geertz goes into detail about the significance and symbols behind the act of cockfighting in the Balinese society. In addition, there is a deep “psychological identification” of Balinese men and the cocks (1972:417). He delves into the psyche between the man and its cock, referencing and comparing it to genitals. The relationship between the man and his cock is metaphorical, but also more than that (Geertz 1972:418). The obsession with cocks is seen to represent Balinese men and it is seen through Geertz’s extensive description of the pattern of cockfighting and how it is performed. Yet, Geertz did not jut look at the psychological aspect, he…
here we designed and built a wireless computer pointing device with accelerometer based movement control. Our implementation allows the user to wear a set of hardware (a glove and connected armband) and control a cursor through different hand orientations and finger presses. Users can operate their computers with their hands in midair without the hassle of desks surfaces or wires.…
These societies have their belief system and their main ingredients tightly protected. For instance, The Akujane masquerade is a powerful phenomenon that no person dares to see its head as any intruder is punished with disgrace and even death. But one ‘positive’ thing about the societies is that they do not harm unless provoked and they could serve as an instrument for cleansing the society of any cultural debris and becomes dominant in the midst of social disorder. Some even serve as socialization groups that initiate men and women into adulthood as in Poro and Mende societies in Sierra Leone and the Oviaosese in Ogori land.…
