The beginning of my senior year, towards the end of 2012 was a very tough time for me, my classmates, and the people in my community. The first horrible tragedy happened when we lost a tenth grade student from our school to suicide. Not even two months later, a freshman girl committed suicide as well. This was an awful time for our community and it was very hard to overcome. These two tragic deaths were the result of bullying. Bullying is very common among schools and kids aren’t really aware of the effects and harm it can cause to others. Bullying is becoming more and more of an issue for children all around the world. Schools, communities, and society as a whole need to take a more in depth look into what bullying really is, its effects, and ways to help prevent it. The first article I found in my research was “Resources and Research on Bullying” by Daniel Callison. He takes a more in depth look into what bullying is, the different types of bullying, and some ways to help prevent it. Callison starts off the article by referring to the case studies done by Emily Bazelon in her book Sticks and Stones. He uses a quote from her book to help define bullying: ‘”The Swedish psychologist Dan Olweus gave us a useful definition for bullying forty years ago: verbal or physical harassment that occurs repeatedly over time and involves an imbalance of power”’ (Callison 20). Often the factor of power plays a big role in bullying. If someone feels as if they can gain more power and dominance over another, they’ll continue to pick on and bully them to express that. The bully repeats this over time because it makes them feel better about themselves. They’re practically putting someone else down, in order to bring themselves up. Callison then goes on to say “a high percentage of those who do bully are often not aware of what they are doing” (Callison 20). I think this is very true and a reason why bullying is a continued,
