Victoria Secret Pink

I’m your typical Pink customer and I mostly buy sweaters, pajamas, sweatshirts, and blankets. In my closet you will find pretty much all UCLA items from the Pink line. I buy them because they’re comfortable and fun to wear. Especially when it has your favorite teams name on it. Each time I think of Victoria Secret I think of UCLA to be honest. When I walk into the store I head straight to the Pink items. The Pink dog and the bright colors attract me to them. I’ve never thought of the Pink brand as being sexy at all. I mean sweatpants and a sweatshirt sexy really? To me that’s more comfortable than anything else.

Well it’s really not lingerie, because it’s just a bar and underwear (boy shorts & thongs) with polka dots or strips on them. They aren’t see through at all nor do you have to buy a garter belt to go along with them. That to me right there is consider lingerie. Not a simple bra and underwear with strips or polka dots on them. Which you can also buy at a Target store and where they advertised women wearing these products in their weekly ads. Now if Target can sell the same items and post them on their weekly ads, is that considered bad? Should parents stop their young teens from going to the lingerie section of Target to look at these items too? People are only making a big deal about the Pink line, because of a few reasons. One, maybe they don’t want to accept their teen is growing up. Or that they think by watching the Victoria Secret run way show their teen will become obsess with being skinny. Maybe it’s that fact they think by wearing these clothes they will have intercourse early. In this era the social network and reality television shows have corrupted the innocents of the teens. Victoria Secret has been around for years and it never was a big deal when I was growing up. Teens watch reality T.V. and try to act the way those humans behave. I don’t think that a store who sells bras and underwear is to blame for the sexiness of a teen. Jersey shore, Jackass, teen mom, and many more are to blame. I know that breast cancer is a serious disease that has taken the lives of many wonderful women. But the new fashion trend for teens is to wear a bracelet that says “I love boobies” that to me is a red flag. I’ve heard my freshman boys ask a girl, if she’s gotten her boobs looked at for cancer and if she hadn’t they would check it for her. Only because they love boobies! There is a 2010 ad they put out that has a young, handsome, shirtless, late teens male on top of a female in a small tank top. The caption reads “Young and Sexy, by Abercrombie and Fitch.” While this ad may seem appealing to the eyes, it is troubling because it uses the idea of sexual appeal to try and sell its clothing. This sort of troublesome lewd image is not only directed at youth in their late teens or early twenties, Abercrombie has been known for trying to sell push up shirts to girls as young as eight or nine. Their marketing strategy has drastically changed, seeing as there is an ad from 1909, showing two young men in canoe hunting, wearing nice buttoned down shirts that are tucked in.     The message it was sending was not that they have a large selection of bras, but that their models have perfect bodies. It caused uproar and a petition on Change.org was sent out to change the slogan of the campaign as “contributes to a culture that encourages serious health problems such as negative body image and eating disorders" (Bahadur). The effects of this poorly worded slogan gave off the wrong message and could cause women to strive for that specific body type. In a study by Teen People, which surveyed girls, “27%... felt that the media pressures them to have a perfect body.” In a study done by Dr. Eric Stice, Dr. Diane Spangler, and Dr. W. Stewart Agras showed that girls that already had body problems showed more “dieting, body dissatisfaction, anxiety and bulimic symptoms like binging and purging” (Goode). If one already had body image issues and felt the pressure from the media, they would end up dieting or subsequently develop an eating disorder. Another example of a wrong message sent through the media is the thigh gap controversy at Urban Outfitters.
