Instructor’s comments:

Describe the Business
I am a small business owner. In fact, the business is a service-disabled veteran-owned business. I qualify as a service-disabled veteran-owned business as the Department of Veteran Affairs has determined that I have a service-connected disability after my six years of service, and I own over 51% of my business (SBA, 2013).
My business produces prosthetic limbs for amputees. The prosthetic limbs are made specifically to fit the veteran. The recent Iraq and Afghanistan wars have left many service members in need of prostheses. Additionally, the aging veteran population is also in need of prostheses due to diabetes and other long-term diseases.
Federal Government Procurement Opportunity
The Department of Veteranss Affairs develops medical contracts to supply prosthetics to veterans. The Department of Veterans Affairs has contracts with various companies, such as Morfey Limbs and Braces, to provide prosthetic limbs. Many of these companies are large and are not certified with the Small Business Administration, but the Department of Veteran Affairs is charged, nationally, with having 10% of their contracts be with service-disabled veteran-owned businesses (Fiscal Year, 2013). My business can help the Department of Veterans Affairs meet their goal of 10%.

There has been no change to Apple Code of Conduct policy since 2014 when Apple started taking previous audit scores into consideration and conduct detailed risk assessments with suppliers who had not been audited in the past before awarding the new business. In 2014, we reviewed 459 suppliers, and factored their responsibility performance into our decisions. This engagement has allowed Apple to address over 700 findings related to labor standards, worker safety, permits, environmental hazards, and chemical management before production began (Apple – 2014 Supplier Code of Conduct). Apple has made significant progress, gaps still exist, and there is more work to do. Apple knows that workers are counting on them and they will not stop until every person in their supply chain is treated with the respect and dignity they deserve (Apple - Supplier Responsibility 2015 Progress Report).…

mall Business Administration (SBA) loans are an option if you don't qualify for a regular business loan. Your business must be owner-operated, for profit, organized as a sole proprietorship, corporation or professional partnership, and fall within the size guidelines set by the SBA. Because these loans are guaranteed by the government, they can be easier to qualify for than conventional business loans. They also allow you to make lower payments over a longer period of time. Although SBA loans are provided through regular banks, the government simply acts as the guarantor. Special SBA loans are available for veterans, active duty military, reservists, National Guard members and the spouses of people in these groups.…

Non-Profit Assistance for the Disabled Veteran is important for two reasons. First, most veterans who return home after military service will not take advantage of their benefits. These benefits could assist them to better their quality of life. Second, veterans are in a position to start non-profit organizations with their Small Business Administration loans from the Veterans Administration. These Non-profit organizations will hopefully help many of our homeless and disabled veterans.…

Over 30 years ago, Congress set a goal of having a certain portion of all federal contracting dollars go to small businesses and established sub-goals for small businesses owned by women, socially and economically disadvantaged individuals, and service-disabled veterans of the Armed Forces, and for small businesses in Historically Underutilized Business Zones (HUBZones). The current government-wide goal for small businesses’ share of contracting dollars is 23%. Every year since 2006, the Federal government has missed the 23% small business goal and all but one of the sub-goals; the 2009 shortfall was greater than $4 billion. Removing barriers to federal contracting and increasing access for small businesses will go a long way in closing this gap.…

When an individual separates or retires from the military, the challenge to reintegrate into civilian life is immediately upon them. Not only is a person subjected to a less structured style of living, the challenge to find employment to support themselves and their families can be an unpromising task. Companies such as Walmart are doing their part to make veteran hiring a priority in their labor portfolio by pushing out initiatives to assist these former military members to return to the work force. Walmart’s “Veterans Welcome Home Commitment” is a program that promotes veteran hiring. The program is seen as favorable by some and undesirable by others. Regardless of a person’s view, Walmart is one of several…

The DEKA arm system, nicknamed “Luke Arm” in honor of the Star Wars hero, is a new and improved prosthetic limb. Created by famous inventor Dean Kamen and his team, the “Luke Arm” is one of the most advanced prosthetic ever built, with the ability to pick up both delicate and rugged substances. This is very important for amputees, especially those who live alone, and should hopefully improve their lives. Prosthetic limbs interested me specifically because they are one of the many brain children of engineering and biology. Prosthetics have to factor in delicate technology and make it as strong as real flesh all while being manageable on a daily basis.…
