Introduction
Colin Hammer, of Hammer Wines has asked us to analyse the internet usage of his employees at Hammers Wines. After analysing the internet usage data himself he has considered an internet restriction at his office where staff members are only able to access certain websites, currently the only internet access restriction is for pornographic websites. Colin’s thoughts are that if the staff members are using the internet for other proposes and “cyberslacking” would decrease the employee productivity in the workplace, after submitting a proposal to his employees about the ‘internet usage ban’ Hammer Wine employees have criticised his proposal indicating that this ban would lower staff morale and chances of decreasing productivity more than it should have. Since Colin Hammer’s ideas weren’t as successful he has asked us to analysis his company internet usage data to provide ideas for a better policy to be implemented.
The Analysis
At Hammer Wines they have 6 different departments which include Accounting and Finance with 6 employees, Sales and Marketing with 13 employees, Human Resources and Training with 5 employees, Manufacturing and Distribution with 12 employees, IT Services with 3 employees and the reception with 2 employees; with a total of 41 workers across Hammer Wines. After analysing the internet usage calculations spreadsheet and linking back to the internet usage spreadsheet which outlines what websites workers usually visits and the amount of time spent on these websites.
The reception department with only 2 employees are currently spending 28% of their time during work on the internet, when referring back to the internet usage spreadsheet it outlines that they actually do spend most of their time on websites that aren’t work related (e.g. Facebook, Skype and YouTube). IT Services department using about 14% of their time on the internet may be a lot since they’re the second most internet usage department but when closely analysing the data given IT Services employees mainly visit websites that can relate back to their job for example they visit Gmail, Microsoft.com and linked.com which all can relate to work but they also have the occasional ‘cyberslacking’ which include visiting websites like games.com and Facebook. Sales and Marketing only spending 2% of their time on the internet but would probably be the worst department with their internet usage and spending a huge amount of time during work on YouTube, Twittier, Tatts.com and tomwaterhouse.com which employees really shouldn’t be doing during work and is more of an outside of work thing to do. The two most behaved departments would have to be the Accounting & Finance and the Human Resources & Training departments; when referring back to the internet usage spreadsheet shows that they spend most of their time on work related websites which show productivity and willingness to work.
The Recommendation
After further investigation and comparing the data with what Hammer Wine employees should be doing, I’ve put together a list of websites which the employees visit and if it should be allowed or banned from employees.

Out of the sites employees mostly visit I have only chosen to ban tatts.com and tomwaterhouse.com; the reason why I have chosen to ban these two websites is because they are completely unrelated to work and would definitely show a lack of productivity within the workplace if workers are constantly using these two betting websites for their personal use should not be permitted in the internet usage policy. Also the reason why I have permitted access social media websites like Facebook, Twitter and Skype is that so the Sales and Marketing department are able to use them for promotion purposes and for Human Resources and Training to use for customer service purposes. If Colin is able to restrict internet usages to different departments, he should only allow access to the social media websites for the Sales & Marketing and the Human Resources & Training departments only as it relates to their work. Another recommendation I would like to make for Colin to implement into Hammer Wine’s is that if he is going to implement an internet policy he should also locate two or three computers that have no restrictions for employees to use during their own time e.g. lunch breaks and non-business hours, this way employees won’t feel like they have been restricted from everything at work and shouldn’t lower work production.
The Conclusion
Colin from Hammer Wine’s has approached us looking to help improve his employees work productivity by limiting their internet usage. Colin provided us with a spreadsheet with data outling what websites the employee visits and how often they’re on the website. After analysing the data provided I have came to an agreement with Colin that he should implement an “internet policy” seeing as his proposal he made earlier wasn’t so successful I have recommended options for Colin to implement and hopefully solutions for his low productivity in his workplace.

The article "The Internet: A Clear and Present Danger?" written by Cathleen Cleaver is a clear claim of the necessity of government regulation to control what is being shown on the Internet. To support her claim, Cleaver gives the pornographic web sites as an example. Cyberslacking is a prominent occurrence amongst the Hammer Wines employees.
