India’s Energy Scenario & Coal

India is currently among the top three fastest growing economies of the world. As natural corollary India 's energy needs too are fast expanding with its increased industrialization and capacity addition in Power generation. This is where 'Coal ' steps in. In India coal is the critical input for major infrastructure industries like Power, Steel and Cement.
Coal is the most dominant energy source in India 's energy scenario.
Coal meets around 52% of primary commercial energy needs in India against 29% the world over.
Around 66% of India 's power generation is coal based.
India is the 3rd largest coal producing country in the world after China and USA.

On account of the growing needs of the steel industry, a thrust had to be given on systematic exploitation of coking coal reserves in Jharia Coalfield. Adequate capital investment to meet the burgeoning energy needs of the country was not forthcoming from the private coal mine owners. Unscientific mining practices adopted by some of them and poor working conditions of labour in some of the private coal mines became matters of concern for the Government. On account of these reasons, the Central Government took a decision to nationalise the private coal mines. Coal India Limited (CIL) as an organized state owned coal mining corporate came into being in November 1975

Since the industrial revolution in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, coal has become more available and the potential to exploit the material, along with other resources, has been great. Coal is a finite resource that is non-renewable and thus running out as the population of MEDCs still require coal for power stations and to produce electricity and as LEDCs industrialize and become more developed they too increase their demand for the resource. This is not helped by the increasing global population, causing many more problems and magnifying existing issues, e.g. global warming.…

Theseus’s slaying of the mighty Minotaur mutes the accounts of his treatment of Ariadne that may differ from Hamilton’s. Would a female still be acknowledged as heroic if she abandoned a man who helped her? For example in Atalanta’s Greek myth, Atalanta avoids romance at all cost and this seems to show that she breaks free from the stereotype that woman must find love to become a hero. Atalanta imposes a condition on men wanting to marry her, “As a way of disposing of them [men] easily and agreeably she declared that she would marry whoever could beat her in a footrace, knowing well that there was no such man alive. She had a delightful time.…

New York, September 21, 2015 -- The impact of the government’s Clean Air Act has set the stage for the decline of coal and has set in motion a chain of events that could transform coal completely by the end of the next decade. Recent coal demand surveys have also revealed that the coal industry has witnessed almost no increase in demand for nearly 7 years, which could soon translate in a complete seizure of sale and extraction as early as 2030. The devastating economic downturn of 2007 has also had a profound effect on the use of coal, with many western countries no longer considering it to be a feasible source of energy though its use is growing in the developing world.…
