Question One
Discuss any four social responsibility issues this company is faced with.
The essence of social responsibility is summed up in this quotation from the Watkinson Report (1973):
“A company should behave like a good citizen in business. The law does not (and cannot) contain or prescribe the whole duty of a citizen. A good citizentakes account of the interests of others besidehimself and tries to exercise aninformal and imaginative ethical judgment in deciding what he should or shouldnot do. As such a chemical producing company in this context can have the following social responsibility issues:
PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT
Since the company manufactures cleaning chemicals, it should protect the environment as the chemicals produced may spill and pollute the atmosphere and the land (environment). When the produced gases combine with water in the lake, it becomes hazardous to human beings and the livestock. More still the chemicals cleaned must be properly disposed off to protect the environment.
PUBLIC HEALTH AND SAFETY ISSUES
This company equally has a responsibility to protect both the people working at the factory and those around the industry from inhaling the chemicals which may be hazardous and fatal to human life.As a precautionary measure, they should provide protective gear to workers and treat their fumes and other waste products before release to the environment. The factory must also educate the community about possible the proper use and dangers of their products. Such awareness programmes would be a show of social responsibility.
PUBLIC DEVELOPMENTS
The company must get involved in developments such as charity works, road
