Addressing the funding of nonprofits in today’s environment requires creativity. Government funding cuts play a major role in a non-profits currently surviving on a safety net established with the Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Senior Homes). Nonprofits also often receive state funds; with the recent economic downturn the groups receiving state support are receiving less funding and the money sent is often in the rears. As state and federal budget cuts loom, resources for nonprofits must rely on the private sector for funding and support. From 1999 to 2009 there was a 31% increase in nonprofit organizations according to the latest data (Charitable Statistics). With this increase in nonprofit organizations, there is a more competitive market for the allotted monies from both public and private resources which cause straining in the market. Organizations must think outside the box to pursue fundraising and awareness to their cause and campaign to differentiate themselves from those with similar missions in such a competitive market. Streamlining data and administrative processes are underway with many nonprofits. Not possessing the funding to develop a digital presence can also cause funding to move slowly since online marketing is a way to raise awareness and attention to potential funding sources.…

Mick Johnson was born into an athletic family of parents who were student athletes at the University of Washington. His dad, Mike Johnson, who used to play college football at Washington and made the NFL as a third-round pick to the San Diego Chargers out of college, got Mick into the sport of football at a young age. He taught his son all the fundamentals of the sport and got his son to have a love for the sport. Mike told Mick that he stopped playing football due to nagging injuries that eventually kept him sidelined for too long. Mick believes everything that his dad says as his dad is his role model so this was the…

For a Civil War soldier, the field hospital could have been worse, to them, than the battle itself. The temporary hospitals were quickly set up near battlefields and doctors usually had few supplies and barely any clean water. The bare, bloody ground was the only bed for most of the wounded soldiers. 1 Hospitals were designed as a series of pavilions connected by covered or enclosed walkways. Soldiers were separated based on their particular wounds or afflictions.2 Each regiment was assigned a surgeon, to provide medical care after battles. A yellow flag marked field hospitals.…

Many men and women were exposed to many diseases. During the Civil War, the Sanitary Commission aimed to keep any prison, hospital and even the battlefield clean as possible. Research has shown that some of 560,000 soldiers died not of wounds but of a disease. Whenever a soldier was in need of bandages the safe way was to wash and reuse them. By using the new bandages that had already been exposed to the diseases and germs they had a higher risk of contracting some disease or…

The soldiers look like they are really dirty and sick because they are really low on supplies, they only have flour and water to mix together to eat/drink and they cook it over their fires. After a while the soldiers developed small pox which looks like really big and disgusting blisters and after a majority of the soldiers were exposed to it the Dr. suggested to cut the soldiers who weren’t infected and harvest puss out of the blisters of an effected soldier and spread it on to the open cut, that would result in the virus slowly making its way into the nervous system while anti-viruses were created to kill the virus to keep the soldier from dying and that would act as an antibiotic to keep them from getting it.…

Have you ever gotten one of your limbs sawed off by some lady with a rusty saw? Probably not. If you have, sorry about that, but you’re not alone. A while ago, in 1861, the Civil War in the United States began. The deadliest war in American history, and it’s not because a bunch of boys were shooting each other with minié balls. It’s because medical hygiene didn’t exist until a few hundred thousand soldiers died of infections. Fortunately, someone figured it was a bad idea chopping off limbs and cleaning soldiers with dirty medical equipment. In the novel, Killer Angels, by Michael Shaara, we get an insight of what unhygienic conditions soldier’s had to face during the war.…

Compared to today’s standards, medicine in the Civil War was in the dark ages and barbaric as the stethoscope was not discovered until 1838. Most colleges taught only one yearly standard of lectures. Sitting through the same set of lectures twice in two years would result in graduation, and the ability to practice medicine. Not much was known about battle wounds, antiseptics, and sanitation since medical thinking was centered on the bowels and bladder during the 1800’s. The number of deaths in the Civil War totaled 624,571, due in part to the lack of sanitation knowledge and “no universally recognized professional standards for doctors,” existed. More deaths were caused from infections and disease accounting for two out of three deaths by the end of the war. In the 19th century, much of the medical…

The diets of soldiers were malnourishing, which did nothing to help the immune systems of the worn down soldiers. The use of sterile dressings, antiseptic surgery, or even sanitation and hygiene was unheard of. A capable surgeon could perform an amputation in approximately ten minutes. The circumstances of these procedures were dangerous and unsanitary. The surgeons operated in coats stained with pus and blood while using bloody knives as scalpels and even fingers as probes. The lack of water, as well as time, meant there was no washing of the hands or instruments. The desperate times caused doctors to utilize houses, churches, schools, and even barns as surgery rooms.(Goellnitz.) Although doctors did everything they knew how to do, the medical practices just weren’t sufficient for the…

As a result of having no organized medical corps in the army, conditions at most of the hospitals were poor. More soldiers during this time died of complications other than battlefield wounds such as dysentery, small pox, and pneumonia. (Son of the South). Hospitals were overcrowded and nurses lacked adequate quality of food and water, clean clothing, sanitation equipment, and other medication supplies to properly provide care for the injured. Because of this, hospitals were breeding grounds for disease and death.…

These aggressive “remedies” of the heroic era of medicine were often worse than patients’ diseases; those who overcame illness during the war owed their recoveries less to the ingenuity of contemporary medicine than to grit and chance. Luck was a rarity in camps where poor sanitation, bad hygiene and diet bred disease, infection, and death. (Dixon)…

Biodefense uses medical measures to help protect citizens from a bioterrorist attack (Medline Plus). Doctors and scientists from around the country have researched and studied the medical measures. These medical measures include medicine and vaccinations (Medline Plus). It also includes medical research and preparations to defend the people against these attacks. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease has conducted basic research about bioterrorism. This basic research is to better understand viruses, bacteria, and other infectious agents that can be a potential threat and be used by a terrorist (U.S. National Library of Medicine). Biodefense may be good, but it is not the only method of keeping people safe from bioterrorist…

Currently, the military health system is comprised of health care, education, public health, civilian medical partnerships, and research and development. The health care’s dependability and reliability varies and can be based on location and subjectivity. Service members not located near a military installation are assigned to civilian health care providers. This is an extremely beneficial procurement of health care, not only due to the immediate availability of civilian providers, urgent cares, and emergency rooms, it also precludes remote service members from having to drive more than 50 miles to visit a physician or…
