Abstract
Jamaica is one of the largest islands in the Caribbean. Research on the island indicates that Breast cancer accounts for 29.4 percent of all cancers identified in the female population. This statistic makes a diagnosis of Breast Cancer the most common cancer for Jamaican women and translates to approximately 43 new cases annually, from a population of 2.5 million. There is a lifetime risk that one of every twenty-one women in Jamaica, will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. Unfortunately, many of these women are unable to afford the cost for treatment and the expenses associated with the recovery progress. The Clinic of Hope and Recovery (COSHARE) was established for three main reasons. First, to provide quality and effective medical care to preserve the lives of women who have been diagnosed with Breast Cancer and are unable to secure the finances necessary to pay for this medical care and treatment. Secondly, at COSHARE these women will be educated and empowered to cope with life during, after and beyond breast cancer through counselling and lifestyle changes. This empowerment, will relate to both the physical and mental wellness of these women. They will engage in nutrition and exercise classes. Additionally, they will participate in support groups which will address issues pertaining to the physical, emotional and sexual changes brought on by the treatment process. Finally, the clinic will house an imagery center which will provide regular and timely tests on our affected patients.
