The bust features an array of colors covering the entire surface of the figure. A soft, brown color is used for the face and neck of the bust. This realistic color compliments the smooth surface, allowing it to appear to have skin. The lips are painted with a calm, red color giving her mouth a soft look to it as well. Her eyebrows and eyes are outlined with black, with the right eye missing paint in the center. The artist uses color to give Nefertiti lifelike quality from a bust of limestone and plaster. While the color of the skin is common, the color of the hair is not. The hair is painted with a rich blue color giving the bust a sense of power and beauty. This sense of power is reinforced with painted jewelery in the hair and around the neck. Shades of blue, green, red, and gold are all found within the jewelery. The majestic beauty of the bust is enhanced by the colors of which it is painted.
Nefertiti's beauty may not have been conveyed as well if the bust was not representational of a real person. The shape overall and within the work is both organic and geometric. The face, neck, and sholders of the bust are rounded and true to the human form. This allows the bust to be easily recognizable as a person. The hair, while also smooth and round, ascends over the head in a widening cylinder shape, which is flat at the top. Her hair rests upon her head in a shape more common to a crown than actual hair. Overall, this gives the bust a look of royalty. Within the work itself, geometric shapes are painted in the jewelery. Rectangles, ovals, hearts, and squares are all shapes found in the jewelery.
It is also within the painted jewelery that we find another appealing element that captures the viewers eye. A number of patterns can be observed on this bust in both shape and color. Within the jewelery around the hair is a repetition of squares that has a rhythm in the use of color. The squares follow a rhythm of switching back and forth from red to green. The jewelery below the head has several different patterns that follow a curved line down the sholders and around the neck. The patterns here are like that of the pattern on the hair, following a repetition of the same shape. There is a repetition of ovals, squares, and even heart shaped symbols. The rhythm of these patterns vary in the use of color. Some using the same color throughout the pattern while others use two or three different colors. The patterns viewed as a whole give the bust a sense of organized structure.
The captivating presence of the Bust of Queen Nefertiti is owing to the beautiful colors, shapes, and patterns she possess. The viewer is able to tap into the desire to honor or worship such a figure, as the people of Nefertiti's time would have done for her. This piece of work successfully celebrates the grandeur of Queen Nefertiti.

The King statue is a larger than life representation that looks different from the back and the front. The base of the statue has four panels, each with a different scene depicted on them. This makes the viewer motivated to walk around to each side and look at the panels. It is difficult to make a personal connection to this work because it is a lot higher than the viewer’s line of sight. It makes the viewer feel underneath the statue and not at eye level. However, the statue’s lifelike quality and naturalistic appeal provide a more personal experience.…

Walking through LACMA there was a section that caught my eye and found it to be of interest to me. That section was the Greek, Roman, and Etruscan Art which was located on the Ahmanson Building, Level 3. There were various unique pieces such as vases, jewelry and sculptures. I chose the sculpture of Hope Athena to do my visual analysis because I found it to be beautiful. Athena was a Greek goddess of wisdom and war. The sculpture at LACMA is a Roman, 2nd century copy after a Greek original of the late 5th century BC School of Pheidias. The sculpture was made out of marble with neutral colors. In parts the color was dull with hues of ivory and golden brown. The shape of the body was rectangular with broad shoulders. The sculpture had her arms missing. Her head was round with hair coming down in vertical waves. She was wearing a warrior helmet from my view point I could not tell what the helmet had on it. The helmet gave her a powerful look. Her facial expression seemed reflective with facial features being symmetrical and smooth. The eye sockets were hollow and dark. Her nose was chipped and her upper and lower lips were thin. One of the focal points for me was how her robe or drapery had such detail throughout the sculpture. It wrapped around her body with great detail with vertical creases and folds giving the sculpture a realistic look. The vertical lines toward the bottom of robe had great detail and were distributed equally and her feet and toes…

The painting still receives much attention and is the base of discussion for many art lovers and historians (Mohan and Centeno, 2005). However, the very details that made the portrait so shocking nearly a century and a half ago are what now delight critics and casual viewers alike; the piece is truly remarkable in its contrasting hues and dramatic details. The lines are crisp and clean, the lighting is flattering yet dramatic, and the composition is pleasing to the eye. While these fundamental artistic components make a great contribution to the attractiveness of this painting, the subject herself deserves to be recognized as the most beautiful thing about the portrait. Gautreau’s physical beauty is often debated even today, mostly because her roman nose is considered too prominent to be classified as classically beautiful. The difference in opinion regarding Gautreau’s physical features is where most modern controversies end. It is the painting’s daring representation of Gautreau, rather, which is inarguably beautiful. The unorthodox pose, the revealing clothing, and the haughty expression were all revolutionary for the time they were presented. Sargent and Gautreau’s goal was not to challenge the societal norms of the time; in fact, their goal was the exact opposite. Inadvertently, however, the appreciation of Amelie Gautreau’s portrait one hundred and fifty years later is now a wonderful reminder of the power in breaking rules and refusing to fit into the definition of…

The body of the figure is long and oval shaped. The body of the sculpture is the largest part of the figure. The shoulders are rounded and there is a long oval indentation that resembles a neckline for a dress. Where the neckline is exposed, there is a layer that covers the figures breasts and appears to be similar to an undergarment for the dress that the sculpture is wearing. On the right side of the…

The speaker, Regina Glover, gave an informative Speech about the history, significance, and aesthetics of AfriCobra. The content of her speech was well developed, in how she choose to organize it. It was clever for her to give a brief history first so that the audience could have a glimpse of how AfriCobra began. To present the significance of AfriCobra second was also smart, because the audience would have wanted to know the overall purpose of the art, which made Regina’s speech and the art itself more meaningful. When she presented the aesthetics of AfriCobra last, it allowed the audience to learn the style of the art, therefore adding interest to her topic.…

Successful sculptural forms are created through careful attention to common artistic elements and techniques. In order to discover an artist’s intentions while looking at a sculptural piece, it is vital to note the artist’s visual cues. Such visual cues may include form, shape, texture, material, lighting, space, and dynamism. In addition, classical sculpture is commonly comprised of well-balanced idealized forms, with a sense of naturalistic beauty and elegance in mind. Great sculpture also must convey a strong sense of gracefulness and stability. The Lansdowne Bust of Athena of Velletri very successfully exhibits artistic qualities and sculptural…

Nordau gives the example of a painting by the artist Valdez. The subject is barbaric and vulgar, and yet, with a fresh perspective, Nordau argues that it is a truly beautiful art piece. Sensual beauty is not what art is always about. If you have an open mind, you can experience the intellectual beauty in almost every art piece. Nordau explains that you can feel the raw emotion of the painting, and maybe that is exquisite enough, all on its…

When it comes to ancient art, it is immensely difficult to state that antiquities belong to a certain group of people or the world. In a contemporary example, antiquities have been cheaply smuggled by Westerners from Middle Eastern countries such as Egypt, Iraq, and Syria, and sold in the black market for millions of dollars. Due to the lack of international laws protecting the ancient arts, smugglers can hardly be classified as heroic or villainous people, thus raising several attitudes towards the entitlement of the ancient arts.…
