Anti-inflammatory effect of C. rotundus was studied and reported by various workers. The 70% alcoholic extract of C. rotundus leaves possessed significant anti-inflammatory activity against carrageenan induced oedema and formaldehyde induced arthritis in albino rats (Sundaram et al., 2008). The methanolic extract of C. rotundus rhizome was reported to have anti-inflammatory activity against carrageenan induced paw edema in rats. The results showed that methanolic extract significantly ameliorate oedema when compared with the reference standard, Indomethacin (Kumar et al., 2012). An early study on ethanolic extract of C. rotundus rhizome extract showed that it has highly significant (P<0.001) anti-inflammatory activity …show more content…
rotundus rhizome exhibited a lipolytic action and fat mobilization from the adipose tissues in rats, making it a drug of choice against obesity (Bambhole, 1988). Karnick (1992) carried out a pilot study on 30 obese people and administered them with powdered tubers of C. rotundus for 90 days, which resulted in weight reduction along with a decrease in serum cholesterol and triglycerides.

rotundus was evaluated for its hepatoprotective activity in rats by inducing liver damage with carbon tetrachloride. The ethyl acetate extract which was administered orally at a dose of 100 mg/kg exhibited significant protective effect by lowering serum levels of the liver enzymes such as alanine aminotransferase (ALT or SGPT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST or SGOT), alkaline phosphatase and total bilirubin. Histopathological examination of the liver sections were also carried out to correlate these biochemical observations (Kumar et al., 2005).
Wound healing activity
The alcoholic extract of root tubers of C.rotundus was analyzed for its wound healing activity in the form of ointment in three types of wound models - the excision, the incision and dead space wound model on rats. Nitrofurazone ointment (0.2 % w/w NFZ) was taken as the control and the extract ointment showed considerable difference in response in all the studied wound models than nitrofurazone in wound contracting ability, wound closure time as well as tensile strength (Puratchikodi et al.,2006).
