My setting believes that all children have a right to a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum accessible in a supportive structured learning environment. We aim to provide opportunities for all children including children with special educational needs to develop fully. Children are supported in their learning and development through systematic, monitoring, assessing, reviewing and recording progress and we adapt and extend this procedure for children who have been identified as have special educational needs or a disability. We know that all children may at some point have some form of special educational need and we aim to address this issue. Emphasis is placed an early identification in order that we can provide the most appropriate provision to benefit the child. We support the value and importance of communication and positive relationships between staff and parents, in order to promote the best interests of the child. We commit to cooperation with parents, the L.E.A, health and social services and all other relevant outside agencies in matters relating to special educational needs and disabilities and attempt to make appropriate beneficial links.…

The CEC is a large international professional organization that strives to improve kids with disabilities and/or the gifted and talented in education. The Council for Exceptional Children has many opportunities to get involved within the organization; CEC leadership, board of directors, committees, workgroups, and representative assembly. In order to find prices I had to download an application. The organization does not have a flat membership fee. Each state has different amounts for CEC dues. Kentucky was not listed so the dues are $117. Depending on your special interest in CEC Divisions other fees apply. For example you could join the council of administrator of special education for $60 or the division of research for $29. CEC provides many opportunities for professional development. They offer CEC convention and expo, CEC webinars, Annual midsummer conference, summer leadership institute, and lots more. The website provides CEC Journals and a bookstore. In my opinion the movement for CEC Standards was a good one, I feel they are just as important as the regular academia standards. I feel that all the standards are equally important, however standard #9 had an impact on me when reading it. I feel that Professional and Ethical Practice is an important one to have. Ethics is a big part of everyday life and children with exceptional needs should get the ethical standards we all receive. “Special educators are aware of how their own and others attitudes, behaviors, and ways of communicating can influence their practice.” Being a special educator is a practice and we as special educators have to be aware of the impact we and others can have on our children. I also felt standard two was influential to me, the Development and Characteristics of Learners. “Special educators know and demonstrate respect for their students as unique human beings,. Special educators understand the similarities and differences in human development and the characteristics between and among individuals with and without exceptional learning needs (ELN). Moreover, special educators understand how exceptional conditions can interact with the domains of human development and they use this knowledge to respond to the varying abilities and behaviors of individual’s with ELN.” This to me is stating that these individuals are just as human as the rest of us, they just need to be treated in…
