CHOC Children's Breathmobile Experience
The CHOC Children’s Breathmobile is the mobile asthma clinic dedicated to serving underserved children who may be unable to travel or pay for preventive asthma care in Orange County. As a volunteer, I helped nurses organize patients' charts, fax medical records, and confirm appointment schedules for patients' parents. Sometimes, I came with nurses and doctors to clinic sites to serve as a translator or simply shadow doctors. One doctor told me that regardless of whether the patients had insurance, the doctor would not turn anybody away if they were in need. Through this experience, I learned that the most gratification I could get is not receiving, but giving back to the

Luke’s House is a small primary care clinic that provides free, basic services to patients without a primary care provider. Most of the clinic’s patients are people who would otherwise have gone to the ER or not received care at all. The mission of Luke’s House is “to be a place of medical and spiritual hope, health and healing for the people of Greater New Orleans, to provide patient centered experiences for students, and to open a doorway to long-term healthcare solutions.” The clinic is in a low-income part of town and has highly limited resources. Adam Bradley, the executive director, is the only full-time staff at Luke’s House. All other physicians, interpreters, nurses, students, and staff are volunteers. A complication of this is that…

Due to being located in an underserved area, the medical practice that Carolyn’s father ran is not what is likely thought of when thinking of a medical practice. In this medical practice, there are no appointments and every patient is seen regardless of their insurance or financial status. Additionally, Carolyn’s father was the only physician in a nearby radius of the community, so there was never a day off for the practice. Through this drastic shift in the work environment, Carolyn found herself in situations that she would have never expected. By working in this environment, Carolyn learned the importance of a close-knit community and making the best of the circumstances that you are put in.…

The mission statement given by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is “to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Consistent with the vision of our founder Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family's ability to pay”. The hospital staff plans to achieve this by increasing and sharing knowledge about their research, advancements, and treatment as well as providing free treatment to any child who has a referral to St. Jude .This mission statement is related to the hospital human resource management because no patient is rejected for any treatment no matter their financial situation. The daily operating cost for St. Jude is $1.8 million, which is primarily covered by public contributions. However, the Call Center Operations raises funds and builds brand awareness by recruiting and retaining valued donors and volunteers and creating advocacy to help St. Jude find cures and save children. The Volunteer Event Recruitment team uses two in-house recruitment centers to recruit volunteers to host successful fundraising events such as…

The Ronald McDonald House Charities are becoming just as recognizable as the Golden Arches of McDonalds. Over the past thirty-five years, this organization has changed the vision of what healthcare really means. They believe strongly that if you are able to change a child’s life – “you not only change the child but also you change the family’s, which can change a community, and ultimately change the world.”…

In my past, I have worked with kids with many similar conditions as the three we were assigned at Easter Seals. But, I never before had to b the care provider for the kids. When I was a helper with the special needs choir at my school, there was always someone else there that was doing all the actual work with them. I have been given an absolutely new perspective on these kids. I have so much for the parents after experiencing the first night at camp. I am still baffled at how they do care for their child on an around the clock basis. I am so glad to be a part of the team that allows the parents to get a break for a weekend while their kids is at camp. The completely eye-opening experience for me today was while hanging out with AT. He had me come out of my shell as we played puppets, danced, and played dress up. The activities he was having me play with him, I haven’t done since I was a kid. This took me out of my comfort zone, which allowed me to grow as an individual. He was such a spirited and happy individual, which made my weekend absolutely enjoyable. His optimism and silly actions showed me the importance of positivity and laughing. This allowed me to realize how these kids are just like any other kid. Yes, they may need more help or attention, but they play just like anyone else would. This population has taught me so much over this weekend. I truly believe Easter Seals should be required for every Viterbo nursing student. It has had me open my eyes to a whole new…

This past Monday, October 24, 2016, I had the opportunity to volunteer at the St. Joseph Center. I had been the ST. Joseph’s Center three years ago as a freshman to do volunteer work. Unfortunately, I was unable to do much as a volunteer, and was not there for very long to really appreciate what the center had to offer. I was very excited to go back, and get a more hands on experience. When we first arrived, we were briefed on the history and set-up of the center, and about each of the residents we would be working with. I was amazed at how much the center has expanded over the years, and all the services that they provide. The center appeared to be very unique, and made me wonder why I had never heard of any other similar programs elsewhere. Growing up Staten Island of NYC, where some of the best medical services are available, I can confidently say there is so such service available on Staten Island. This really got me thinking, and made me realize how important St. Josephs Center is not just for Scranton, but how important and influential it can and should be for everyone.…

Gloria Steinem wrote on organizing social change, “If you want people to listen to you, you have to listen to them. If you hope people will change how they live, you have to know how they live. If you want people to see you, you have to sit down with them eye-to-eye.” The idea of meeting people at their baseline and involving them in the development of community programs resonates with me. Through my Masters in Public Health and in Health Science, I developed the skillset for asking a question, piloting research data, and operationalizing the outcome so it can best translate to a population. More so, through this course of study, I developed the ability to influence the narrative of a community. My interest in advocacy and public service is rooted in seeking meaningful connections with my patients and their guardians, and developing programs that benefit the…

My appreciation for local doctors grew immensely when my dad had an atrocious fall and broke his back. We were very fortunate to have experienced doctors less than forty miles away. When I saw how incredibly caring and genuine the doctors were with both my dad, my family, and I, I realized that I wanted to serve the people in New Mexico with the same care that we received in our stressful situation. When an unexpected injury occurs, people rely on the comfort of knowing that the help of doctors is nearby. The people of New Mexico are truly diverse in a unique way and my experience with them has given me a heart that desires to give back to them.…

They can’t attain well-paid jobs due to educational status and are often confined to living in lower income public housing areas in the city. These areas are often near industrialized companies where smog, smoke, and pollutants fill the area. The respondent expressed that the pollutants stemming from the factories often causes frequent asthma attacks for the neighboring children. It makes it difficult for kids to play outside during the summer in fear of the smoke triggering attacks. The interviewee stated that thirty years ago this was the same air pollution that often causes children to stay inside limiting physical activity. Limiting physical activity as a child due to the physical environment causes an increased risk of obesity, which results in other conditions. As nurses, we can obtain a trusting relationship to our patient, which allows the individual to express their needs beyond health. Fawcett model of upstream factors shows the components that are often unnoticed when healing a person holistically. These factors should be incorporated in the plan of care for individuals living in the inner-city…

Throughout my short time on earth and while living in America and abroad, it had become painfully obvious that there are an inordinate amount of people who do not have access to quality affordable health care. Among these, too many lack either the knowledge or the will to make preventative health care one of their priorities in life. This has made the need to be accessible as a health care provider as well as an educator a must. But the story does not begin here, oddly enough. The calling stretches back so far that a journey in time is all that exists to bring the reality into view.…

Day 3: The second clinic is in a valley. Imagine this… a major highway overpass that towers over two hillsides that converge upon a small river. The houses on these hillsides are made of sheets of metal on dirt flooring and are nearly stacked on top of one another. They have no running water; households share community bathrooms. We are working in a one-room schoolhouse with one door and bars (in place of glass) for windows. When I walked into the clinic today, sitting in the middle of the room is a…
