‘Macbeth’ is a well-known play written by William Shakespeare. It is a bloodthirsty tale and shows that the evils we will go to in order to get what we want. It is about a character called Macbeth who plots and kills in order to reign and become king. As he is crowned king, the world around him falls to pieces. Macbeth was set in the 1000s but was written in the 1600s as a play which shows that Shakespeare wrote about the past and how it differed and how people would do many evil things to accomplish their wants.
‘The Laboratory’ is a poem and a monologue written by Robert Browning. This poem was first published in June 1844. It is set in the seventeenth century but was written in the eighteenth century which also shows a reference to the past. The speaker is in a laboratory seeking a poison to give to some woman. As the poem opens up, we see that the speaker is a left our member of a love triangle and that the speaker is a woman. Robert Browning explores the jealously and vengefulness of someone disappointed in love.
‘Macbeth’ and ‘The Laboratory’ are related because of the theme of power in both stories are connected to a murder plot. Furthermore both characters use murder to obtain power and power is what drove them to murder. This shows me that power is portrayed to be a corrupting influence and shows that some people will kill just to acquire power. Both stories also involve women who will do anything to obtain power. Lady Macbeth attests to murdering children if it will gain her a throne and the speaker in ‘The Laboratory’ states that her fortune is a small price to see her rival dead.
Shakespeare presents Lady Macbeth as a disturbed character as we can see throughout the play that she hungers for power and desire for the death of King Duncan. This is shown as she begins to obsess and persuades
