Complete a Preprinted Employment Application (Outcome 4)
If possible, obtain an employment application form from an employer in your target industry—even one from your target employer. Using an application from your target industry provides the best preparation and practice. If one is not available, use the application form on the product website (Ch7. Employment Application1.pdf or Ch7. Employment Application2.pdf ) or search the Internet for “sample job applications.” Many samples are available on websites such as Quintessential Careers and About.com’s Job Searching page. Complete the application for practice and use it as a model when you fill out actual applications for employment.
Follow these tips when completing an application:
Follow the directions! Read the entire application before you start filling it out.
Prepare each section carefully.
Make sure the application looks attractive and neat.
Preprinted applications. Write your answers neatly using a blue or black fine-tip pen
Online application. Print the application after you fill it out on a computer.
Use the correct lines or spaces for your answers.
Practice on a copy of the application, squeeze in as much positive information about yourself as possible, and abbreviate to fi t the information in the spaces provided.
Answer every question with a correct and well-phrased response. Use N/A (not applicable) if a question does not apply to you. This shows that you did not overlook the question or skip it.
Include a cell phone number or second telephone number of a person who is readily available and willing to take messages for you.
Be sure all information is accurate (dates, addresses, numbers, names, and so on).
Be honest. Employers check the facts and immediately eliminate a candidate who has supplied false information.
Use this space for your notes.
