Cajanus Cajan Case Study
Abstract: Cajanus cajan (L.) is one of the Pigeon pea cultivated in tropical and subtropical areas. It contains many fractions characterized by their bioactivity and efficacy to enhance biological activities. The aim of the present study was to fingerprinting the Cajanus cajan plant , then extract the flavonoids fraction (FFCC) with methanol extract, and assess the antimutagenic efficacy of the fraction extract to reduce genotoxicity induced by cyclophosphamide (CP) using chromosome aberrations, in mice bone-marrow cells and spermatocytes, and DNA damage by comet assay. Three doses from FFCC were orally administrated once for 24h at 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg b.wt simultaneously with CP at 20 mg/kg b.wt. The results revealed that the used doses of FFCC were safe in all experiments and their effect was normal compared to control group. Significant inhibition to CP-induced chromosomal aberrations in both somatic and germ cells was observed after concurrent administration of CP and different doses of …show more content…
It is nontoxic edible herb, grain legume crop [1]. Cajanus cajan is full with bioactive components, which give it the potential to treat different diseases such as hepatitis, diabetes, measles and dysentery [2,3]. Also, the pigeon pea exhibits a fundamental role to act as anti-inflammatory, anti-biotic and anti-irritation agent [4,5]. In traditional medicine, the pigeon pea leaves extracts were used to kill worms and reduce pain [6], treat malaria, ulcers, injuries, and reduce hypercholesterolemia [7-9], sickle cell anemia, plasmodiasis, hepatic disorders, and hypoxic-ischemic brain [10-13]. The phytochemical research studies illustrated that the Cajanus cajan seeds possess numerous bioactive components including saponins, tannins, anthroquinone, triterpenoids, reducing sugars, alkaloids, phenols, and flavonoids

Herbal supplements are products made from plants for use in the treatment and management of certain diseases and medical conditions. Herbal supplements commonly address specific medical concerns, such as the common cold, menopause, or memory loss. All plants, including herbs, naturally synthesize many (sometimes hundreds) of complex chemical compounds as part of their metabolic activities. Many of these compounds are not directly related to the plant 's energy production but are toxins synthesized by the plant in order to ward off other plants, herbivores, and plant parasites. Thus, all plant materials contain large numbers of chemical compounds, some of which may exert a desired physiological effect and others which may exert no effect whatever or any number of undesirable effects when consumed by humans. In fact, many herbs contain chemical compounds that act…

Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum graceum L.), an indigenous spice crop of India has been widely used in traditional medicine for treating various kinds of diseases. In this work, 10 genotypes of T. foenum-graceum were evaluated for their diosgenin content and productivity, ascorbic acid (AA), total phenolics (TP), flavonoids (TF), tannin and antioxidant activity (AOX). Results indicate that fenugreek is a good source of flavonoid and total phenolics ranging from 2.74to 12.03 mg/g and 22.59 to 62.59 mg/g, respectively. Diosgenin content ranged from, 6.12 to 10.98 mg/g respectively. One way ANOVA analysis was performed to find the functional attributes which would account for most of the variance.…

C.spinosa L. is a perennial spiny bush that bears rounded, fleshy leaves and big white to pinkish white flowers. It is native to the Mediterranean region and growing wild on walls or in rocky coastal areas throughout India. The phytochemicals identified in this plant were lipids, flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, tannins, lignins, glucocapperin, and polyphenols (Al-Said et al 1988; Calis et al. 2002; Manikandaselvi and Brindha 2014). Even though it has been used in traditional Indian system of medicines for various human diseases, the summation of its medicinal properties is lacking. C. spinosa L. has anthelminthic, cytotoxic, anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic, anti-oxidant, anti-microbial, cardiovascular, chondroprotective, anti-diabetic, hypolipidemic, anti-allergic, anti-histaminic, immune modulatory, anti-carcinogenic and anti-hepatotoxic activity (Eddouks et al 2004; Inocencio et al.…

These extracts have shown dose and time dependent superoxide scavenging activity. Flavonoidal content was also found to be high in both of these extracts. Flavonoids are well known for antioxidant activity. This suggests that any drug/extract containing estrogenic property with flavonoids (non-steroidal phytoestrogen) might be better anti-fertile. Ethanolic extract with higher flavonoidal content was found to be more potent then aqueous extract. As well the activity is dose dependent which supports the role of non-steroidal phytoestrogen concentration. These observations tend to suggest that, ethanolic and aqueous extracts possess a significant estrogenic, in a dose dependent…
