Bay Leaves and Cinnamon Sticks vs. Calabash Parkway
Revision
American Living In English 102, we have read two novels entitles Bay Leaves and Cinnamon Sticks and Calabash Parkway. In both novels we read the story of women who left their home country and families to come to America, New York to be specific. Although both novels have similar story lines and characteristics; the major things that make them similar also make them different. In bay leaves the woman (Millie) left to make a better life for her family, sent money home regularly, and she had a husband whom she loved who left her. Gatha (the woman in Calabash) on the other hand left to assist a sick friend in her time of need, made promises to get their papers so they could come into the states, and had a husband who adored her but she just didn’t feel the same. In Bay Leaves, Millie comes to New York so that she can obtain a job that has better pay that she could improve her family’s life back home. Millie had a job very similar to one she would have been doing back home but was making double, maybe triple what she would have been back home. While coming here Millie stayed focused on her purpose and made sure she was on the right path of completing her goal. On the other hand, in Calabash, Gatha had no plans or intentions on ever coming to New York. It wasn’t until a close friend said she wanted her to join her in her time of need that Gatha decided to go and made it clear that once everything was over she’d be coming back home. Once they got there Gatha immediately started doing what she came there for. After while her friends sickness took a toll and they made plans to come home. Gatha on the other hand wrote her friend a note saying that she liked New York and would not be returning home with them. Because of her choice to stay in New York, Gatha had to find a job and a place to stay so she could make end meet later she writes a note home
