The famed Medici family of Florence produced 4 Popes, 3 queen regents of France, and engaged in countless acts of assassination and subterfuge. This was representative of the Italian society where Baldassare Castiglione wrote his masterwork, The Book of the Courtier. Italian politics and culture was shaped by the fact that Italy consisted of many autonomous city states that each had their own royal courts, standing armies, cultures, and rulers. This divisiveness in politics helped to foster an extremely stratified society in regards to class and gender. This social stratification causes Castiglione’s definition of the perfect courtier to differ immensely from his definition of the perfect Court woman, and it causes the characteristics of his…

In the early 1700’s the lives of men and women were very different. Social equality was not extended to the women in the household. Wealth, intelligence, and social status were not of importance when it came to be head of the household. They were taught that their husbands were above then and that it was a “wife’s duty” to “love and reverence them,” (Henretta 97).…

The wife of bath is a very confident woman who, in the prologue of her tale, talks about her five husbands. She seems very satisfied with her life and her choices; she is fulfilled regardless of the men she was married to. Even with all their deaths, she remains happy and independent. “But even now I will strive to be merry.” (Lines 478-479) The story she tells is about a knight who, after he rapes a young girl, is forced by the queen to find out what women desire the most. He finally discovers that what women want the most is to have sovereignty over their husbands. This goes directly along with the character of the wife of bath, who loved the control she had over her husbands more than anything else. The story proves that the answer to what women want the most is not just one static statement. What a person desires most in life depends on their own character and their own…

In the introduction of Boccaccio’s The Decameron, Boccaccio describes the town with the plague. As Falvo’s main idea states, Boccaccio’s ideals of beauty, perfection, and decorum are set against the harsh and bitter reality of the plague. The description used of the plague gives the story a very dark setting. It is unknown why he would start the beginning of the story out with a plague other than to bring the seven people together to talk about their stories. According to “Boccaccio 's Decameron and the Ciceronian Renaissance” written by, Michaela Paasche Grudin and Robert Grudin, “Boccaccio was among the founders of the Renaissance,” they also said he was a humanist and sometimes “accredited to as the founder of Humanism.” While Boccaccio was never married, he was a father of three children. Grudin’s state, “Disappointing love affairs and deteriorating health made Giovanni depressive and his writing started showing signs of bitterness especially towards women.” There is talk that his Decameron stories are for the women who have not been married yet or have not fell in love. Personally, the plague start is depressing, hints to the woman who have not loved yet; it sets the tone as a depressing yet loving and hoping story, “Dark Humor”.…

This was one of the most popularly used ideologies and a metaphor of the late Victorian time which was basically used by the historians in their bid to deftly analyze the roles of women in the society. It generally meant that two spheres of life that existed between men and women as far as roles are concerned were very much separated from each other. The belief went ahead to assign the women and men some of the distinctively virtual and opposite functional attributes and characteristics that were very much regarded as legitimate. The two spheres were of the public and private life and it was posited that the husband’s role (this included all the men in general) were absolutely in charge of the public part of life while on the other hand, women (or more appropriately, all the women in general) had the role of taking care of the private life. It was according to these…

Caliban is a naturally innocent and pure character in Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Throughout the play Caliban is portrayed as a primitive beast with a vile mind, although he wasn’t originally that way. Caliban initially had no evil influence on him other than the way nature made him. Prospero’s later influence on the creature was the cause of his negative actions which isn’t the fault of Caliban himself. Caliban, although seen as a monster, is truly an innocent creature with good intentions until corrupted by Prospero’s evil attempts at humanization.…
