At the beginning, Buck learns that he has to fight for his survival to find his true self and to start his quest. First, Buck learns the “Law of Club” by surviving the beating being given him by the man in the red sweater. For example, the man in the red sweater won't stop beating Buck until Buck gives up attacking him. Buck bleeds and becomes unconscious. Since Buck gives up fighting back with the man in the red sweater, he's learned that survival is required for his quest. First, Buck becomes a good sled dog and becomes the leader of the team. For example, he learns commands from his masters and learns that is he doesn't follow the rules, he will get punished. If he follows the rules he gets rewards like extra food and feet rubs for his cold, rough feet. Since Buck earns Francois and Perraults respect he gets treats and the other dogs begin to learn that they need to be more like Buck so they get rewarded too. Second, Buck protects other dogs from Spitz because Buck realizes that if he does not protect the other dogs, then the dogs will not follow his lead. For instance, other dogs follow Bucks lead and become better sled dogs which makes the team better. Since Buck commands other dogs to disobey Spitz, Spitz gets angry and starts to get even more angry at Buck, which puts Buck in danger. Last, Buck finds love with John Thornton, his new master. For example, John Thorton starts shaking Bucks head to show that John shows love and compassion to Buck. Since John Thorton and Buck have lots of love for each other, they protect each other from danger. In conclusion, Buck heads on with his quest by gaining his master's respect, status among his peers, and the love of John
