I am Ethan Ritz and a current 9th grader at Milken. For Service Learning this year, I was a Counselor in Training at Camp VBS for two weeks of the summer. A meaningful experience I had while being a CIT was playing with the kids in the pool. They loved the attention and the activities we played. I would give them a piggy back ride around the pool and if they wanted would throw them in the air. This always put a huge smile on their faces. One kid even said, “That was awesome!” when I threw him in the air. I loved making each kids day at camp even better.
During Service learning, I noticed many kids laughing and have gleaming eyes. This was from the fun atmosphere the CITs and other staff created for the campers. This …show more content…
made me feel even better. Internally, I felt like I was doing a mitzvah by helpings others. Before being a CIT, I was nervous and did not know if I could be successful. After being a CIT for two straight years, I have come to love every experience of it. The only challenge I had was disciplinary action against younger kids. It was hard for me to get stern with them, but I knew it was necessary.
A Jewish source that related to my experience was the quote, "Have I not commanded you?
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9. This is relevant towards my experience because before being a CIT, I was scared and felt I would fail, but in the end I became very good at my job. Like in this quote, I was not discouraged and even with my fear, took the challenge on of being a CIT at a camp. My service learning experience deepens my understand of the Jewish Source because I am aware of what situation the text is trying to prepare individuals for. I can relate to what the text is stating. The Jewish Source deepens my service experience because now I know what kind of attitude to have in similar experiences. I believe my service learning experience helped me understand talmudic texts better and what they are trying to convey.
I made the campers I helped ecstatic throughout the day. I believe the other staff and I made campers want to come to camp every single day of the summer. In addition, I believe all of the CITs helped the head of the camp tremendously. He told us when we were all finished how much we all helped him this summer. He told us he could not have gone through it without us. This experience should pave my way into a life of helping other young and
old.
