The lives of most people have been impacted by cancer in some way, including my own. While my mother is a breast cancer survivor, cancer has taken the life of my paternal grandfather and the parents of multiple friends. My maternal grandfather is currently battling stage 4 bladder cancer and recently took part in a ground-breaking medical trial that’s allowed him to be cancer free for nearly a year. Developments such as this or the recent breakthrough CRISPR/Cas9 technology, which edits genes by deleting or replacing unwanted sections of the DNA sequence, excite me about the potential of a cancer free…

A typical day for me is spent depending on how I’m feeling. If I am feeling well I will go for a walk either around the neighborhood or at a nearby lake. If not, I will spend the day resting at home and spend time with my family and friends. (Question 2). I no longer have a job because my health does not permit it. (Question 3). I have lost most of my hair and I am quite thin due to the cancer treatments I have undergone (Balducci 2003). In my trying to stay active I find myself out in the public eye frequently. Most people around me display other-oriented communication. Because cancer is a subject that people either know someone who suffered from it, or suffered from it themselves, it enables people to display empathy in it’s highest form. Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in this country (Bellenir 2009). It is a subject that people think about and are conscious of it being a possibility in their own future. See others display empathy and other-oriented communication is a big part of my everyday life.…

In my opinion, I think more people should learn about cancer. We can hold assemblies to bring more awareness to this delicate subject. We can also bring some information on how to prevent some types of cancer. For instance, we can encourage people to not smoke, stay at a healthy weight, eat right, stay active, and get recommended screening tests. We can inspire people to help and support cancer patients whether by making their own simple fundraiser or donations. Helping the fight against cancer is an opportunity for us to honor cancer…

Cancer, while one of the biggest fears in many people’s minds, is excessively prevalent today especially in a world where it seems as if everything is or could possibly be a carcinogen. Though knowledge is rather limited when it comes to the causes of cancer and why it appears in some people but not others, it is known that “cancer occurs when a cell is genetically altered and unable to control its own growth and proliferation” (MacDonald, 2010, p. 176). Unfortunately no one, including children and adolescents, is immune to cancer so it is not uncommon to see children as young as newborns to as old as late teens develop cancer (MacDonald, 2010).
