Music is almost everywhere we go, you have the ability to listen to songs from your car, on aeroplanes and even while you go for a run. It makes up a large majority of today’s culture. Among the many songs released every day from everywhere, there is the top chart music. Top chart music contains the songs that are considered popular and most frequently listened to among the general population. The song lyrics especially with top charts, usually represent current cultural beliefs and what society does and does not condone. Song lyrics and topics are constantly changing to remain relevant whilst they are influenced by society. By comparing two popular songs of 2017 to two popular songs from 1997, you can evidently see how society greatly affects …show more content…
The song was originally released in 1974, for famous actress Marilyn Monroe, when she passed away. Unfortunately, on the 31st August 1997 Princess Diana was killed in a car crash. Elton John less than a month later released Candle In The Wind 97’ as a tribute mourning her death. Although the song was not written for Princess Diana originally, it became popular as the nation respected her so much. The song was able to represent the thoughts that many had for her. The song starts with the lyrics ‘Goodbye England’s rose, may you ever grow in our hearts. You were the grace that placed itself, where lives were torn apart.’ Here it is clear to read that just through a couple of sentences, she made a significant difference to the nation. This song was a mourning for the country and it is likely many listened to it to resemble the respect they had for her. This can further develop this idea of not only can song lyrics be considered relevant by using typical society norm ideas, but rather identify and show events happening around the world.     For as long as mankind has walked on this earth, music has been an important part of our culture and lifestyles. Each walk of life beats to a different drum. Different cultures use music for many aspects of their lives; for religious purposes, for celebrations, for comfort, for sorrow, for relaxation, for sports, for dances, for energy, for learning, for sleeping, and for sexual experiences. Everyone uses music for something. Music connects with people and reaches them in ways that words simply cannot. Music is a representation of what feelings sound like. It expresses emotion and brings that characteristic out from within us; it tells us a story. Every generation has its’ own sound and different music styles have emerged and become extremely popular. In the 1950’s Rock n Roll came to the scene and shocked everyone. The new sexual language and sex appealing dance moves had people thinking it was the end of all innocence. Then in the 1980’s Hip Hop Rap became increasingly popular. Many people viewed this new music as stupid and disgusting. It was seen as a ghetto, spoken word, vulgar, type of music.
