Canisius Mountaineers Case Study
MORGANTOWN, W.Va.--The West Virginia University baseball team's bats were silenced by Canisius on Wednesday afternoon at Monongalia County Ballpark.
The Golden Griffins (11-13) topped the Mountaineers (12-10) 9-0, holding WVU to just three hits.
Freshman designated hitter Ivan Vera got on base four times with a hit and three walks. Hill and sophomore pinch hitter Kyle Casserly had the other two WVU hits.
“I don’t know if I’ve ever been a part of something like that,” Mountaineers' head coach Randy Mazey said. “They were throwing pitchers that haven’t pitched much for them and our at-bats were just awful today. If you were to talk to Kansas’ coaches, and say ‘what do you have on the Mountaineers?’ They’d say ‘that’s a good hitting team, those guys can really hit.’ You talk to Canisius’ coaches about the Mountaineers, and they’d say the exact opposite. Now we just have to go figure it out.” Freshman starter Tanner Campbell got the nod for WVU. He gave up four runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings, suffering his first loss of the season.

The Golden Griffins scored three more runs off the right-hander in the sixth. The Mountaineers' bullpen got smacked around in the eighth inning. Reliever Nick Wernke walked the first two batters and Mark McKenna reached on second baseman Darius Hill's error. Christ Conley's single to center field drove in a run and gave Canisius a 6-0 lead. The Golden Griffins added on three more runs that inning before freshman Endy Morales got the final out. In the ninth, freshman Jacob Potock made his first appearance of his career and recorded the final two outs of the inning with one strikeout.
Junior first baseman Jackson Cramer walked in the fifth and extended his on base streak to a career- high 42 games.
The Mountaineers will remain at home on Friday for a three-game series against the Oklahoma State
