Capstone Paper 3 Criminal justice can be defined as the upholding of social control, deterring crime, and punishing those who violate laws with criminal penalties or with rehabilitation efforts. Police corruption has had a sharp increase in the last decade with no indication of this trend being reversed, while some experts believe that we should work together in order to solve this problem there are others who say this problem will never cease so why even bother. Regardless of one’s point of view, it is very clear that there are some major police corruption issues that need correction. In today’s society we are constantly dealing with officers that are being bribed by criminals through drugs and money. London's Metropolitan Police say that three were detained Thursday morning on allegations related to "inappropriate payments to police and public officials (Associated Press, 2013)." This kind of behavior is why police departments should be conducting routinely polygraph exams in order to prevent this kind of incident from occurring. Another example of an officer taking a form of payment from an individual would be an officer pulling over a citizen and seeing that he or she had a bag of marijuana after having searched the vehicle and the officer then releasing that individual freely in exchange for the bag of marijuana. But say this individual went back to the police station right after this incident occurred or later that day, and got a surprise polygraph exam that same day. That police officer would have then been caught if not then that officer would be thinking twice on if he or she should attempt to do this again, therefore reducing the chance of this kind of incident happening again. Although bribery can be a big part of police corruption it is not the only kind of corruption. Another form of
