Proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates are essential to not only the human body, but plants and animals too. Because we know about these macromolecules, we can better understand the world around us. They play a vital role in keeping us healthy and aiding in the diagnosis of medical conditions, they are responsible for what keeps us running and they are vital in even the tiniest forms of life; cells. Cells are the building blocks of everything around us and without cells and these essential components of life there would be no life.
The benedicts reagent test was designed to expose the presence of reducing sugars. I stated before that many of the substances I tested changed colors, the color being an indication of the amount in each substance. Distilled water, diet soda, and glucose, all resulted in blue solutions, which is what we started with, this meant that these substances did not contain reducing sugars. Sucrose changed slightly, indicating that, while very low, there was some presence of reducing sugars. Pine apple juice turned a dark yellow/ green color, also indicating a low presence of reducing sugars. Corn syrup, non-diet soda, and onion juice all turned a yellowish brown, meaning that these solutions contained a moderate amount of reducing sugars. Potato juice and milk both turned a bright yellowish orange color, indicating that these two solutions contained the highest amount of reducing sugars. I ranked my results based off the amount of reducing sugars they contained, I listed them in the order that I discussed them
