Carbon Dioxide and Deforestation
DEFORESTATION

INTRODUCTION:

Deforestation, clearance or clearing is the removal of a forest or stand of trees where the land is thereafter converted to a non-forest use. Examples of deforestation include conversion of forestland to farms, ranches, or urban use. The term deforestation is often misused to describe any activity where all trees in an area are removed. However in temperate climates, the removal of all trees in an area in conformance with sustainable forestry practices—is correctly described as regeneration harvest.
REASONS FOR THE OCCURANCE OF DEFORESTATION:

Deforestation occurs for many reasons: trees are cut down to be used or sold as fuel (sometimes in the form of charcoal) or timber, while cleared land is used as pasture for livestock, plantations of commodities and settlements. The removal of trees without sufficient reforestation has resulted in damage to habitat, biodiversity loss and aridity. Deforestation has also been used in war to deprive an enemy of cover for its forces and also vital resources.Disregard or ignorance of intrinsic value, lack of ascribed value, lax forest management and deficient environmental laws are some of the factors that allow deforestation to occur on a large scale.
CAUSES :
According to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) secretariat, the overwhelming direct cause of deforestation is agriculture. Subsistence farming is responsible for 48% of deforestation; commercial agriculture is responsible for 32% of deforestation; logging is responsible for 14% of deforestation and fuel wood removals make up 5% of deforestation. Other causes of contemporary deforestation may include corruption of government institutions ,the inequitable distribution of wealth and power ,population growth and overpopulation and urbanization. Globalization is often viewed as another root cause of deforestation , though there are cases in which the impacts of globalization (new flow of

Another cause of deforestation in Canada is urban development, as population increases more land is needed to provide homes for families, which makes up 19 percent. The other important causes of deforestation are forest roads and hydroelectricity which make up 10 percent each ("Deforestation in Canada—What Are the Facts?"). Many countries build roads into remote areas to improve the transportation of goods and provide entry into lands that were not accessible…

Human beings have been clearing forest for many years in order to have land for farming and keeping livestock (nasa.gov). The need to feed the ever increasing population has in most cases necessitated clearing of forests to plant crops and produce food. However, this action has resulted in reduced forest cover especially tropical forests. Tropical forests are known to be home of various animal species. Therefore, when tropical forests cover decrease so will the population of animals that depend on the forests for food and shelter. Despite the fact that clearing of tropical forests increases land for farming so as to meet food demand for the growing population, the arguments of deontological ethical theory would disagree. According to deontological ethical theory, human beings are morally obligated to act according to certain set principles and rules regardless of the outcome of the…

Before you can understand anything surrounding deforestation, you must know what it actually is. Many people believe that it is just cutting down trees, specifically in the rainforests. They are correct, but there is much more to it than that. Yes, deforestation is cutting down trees, but what many people don’t know are the effects that it has. Deforestation affects almost every aspect of life. It affects the atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, as well as the global economy and politics. Many people believe that deforestation is a modern idea that was brought on by the industrialization era. The truth is deforestation has been around since the beginning of mankind. Scientists believe that most of Europe had become deforested by 1850 (Kaplan 3024). As you can see, deforestation has been occurring for a long time, and globalization has just sped up the process and increased the rates.…
