Introduction
Career goal:
To become a dental hygienist. To clean teeth and educate dental patients on how to establish and maintain suitable oral hygiene.
Long-range, general abilities and requirements:
At least an associate’s degree in dental hygiene
Ability to work as part of a team
High school courses in Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics should be taken
Dental hygiene programs require applicants to have completed at least 1 year of college

Current skills and experiences:
High school mathematics courses (algebra 1, geometry, algebra 2, college math)
High school science courses (earth space, biology, chemistry)

Short-term, specific goals to make my dreams come a reality:
Achieve good test scores
Keep grades up to meet requirements for Dental hygiene programs
Continue work experience with internship or part-time/ summer employment
Participate in campus organizations for Dental hygienists students.
Earn an associate’s degree in dental hygiene
Improve physical stamina, detail oriented and dexterity skills by focusing on courses to enhance them
Consider furthering my education by staying in college for my bachelor’s degree
People in this career field are dedicated to helping patients maintain good oral health and preventing dental disease.
Three specific tasks a person in this field might perform are
removing calculus and plaque (hard and soft deposits) above and below the gum line assess and chart the teeth and oral structures expose process and label dental radiographs
I see myself in this career 20 years from now being a Dentist and owning my own dental school or program for students like myself to further their education and be successful in life.
I chose the college Clark Atlanta University because I always wanted to go to a HBCU and they have a wonderful dental hygienist program.

1. What they do: Dental hygienists give advice and information to people on how to maintain the health of their teeth.
2. What to learn: If you are interested in this career the high school courses you should take are Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics. Two years of post secondary education is recommended for this career.
3. Money and Outlook: The earning potential couldn’t be found. The entry wage is $79,090 per year, The average wage is $93,410 per year, and the experienced wage is $115,510 per year. Employment outlook for dental hygienists is expected to grow much faster than the average for all other occupations. Between now and 2020, employment of hygienists is expected to grow by 38 percent.

6. Interviews: The insight I have gained regarding working in this field is you have to have compassion because sometimes patients are in extreme pain or have fears about undergoing dental work and the hygienist must be sensitive to their emotions.

Maintaining a grasp on small instruments all day puts a strain on the hands and wrist.

For the most part all dental offices are in clean, safe environments.
