4. Design of the study
4.1 Statement of the problem
A career based education should impart a quality and a professional education so as to make the students industry – ready. But nowadays career education never leads to take a successful profession in most of the colleges primarily due to its low quality of syllabus in schools and frequent changes in government policy. The students who pursue higher education don’t have a strong base in subjects to carry out their further studies towards great future and thereby making their dreams come true. The title of the study is An Analysis of the Tamil Nadu State Samacheer (Equitable Education) English Syllabus with specific reference to IX Standard of Select Schools in Trichy.
4.2 Rationale for the study After completing the college education, students want to get a job in any one of the companies or even to start a business on their own. This is not only the desire of the students but also the dream of the parents. Nowadays unemployment is the major issue faced by the students. Their dreams are scattered without a desired job though they have good grades in their subjects. The truth is that they are unable to express themselves in English efficiently. The reason behind their struggle without a good command of the language is that they don’t have a strong base at their school level. Framing of syllabus which equips the students to meet the present situation should be done meticulously. School syllabus should have depth in its aspects so that the student can have a good understanding about the subject at their school and college levels. The …show more content…
Two sets of questionnaires, one for teachers of English and the other for students of IX standard were administered. A structured interview was conducted in Chennai on 6th August 2016 with Mr. P.B.Prince Gajendra Babu, General Secretary, State Platform for Common School System, Tamilnadu. and Dr. S.S. Rajagopalan, Educationist and a member of Samacheer Syllabus (Equitable syllabus) Committee, Chennai, Tamilnadu. An informal interview was also conducted for the teachers of English from various schools.
4.6.1 Questionnaire for the students and the teachers The separate questionnaires, one for the students of ninth Standard English medium and the other for the teachers of English were prepared. Though the same kind of information was sought from the students and the teachers, they were framed in such a way that the questions presented to the teachers were greater in number. (Appendix ……..)
The Student Questionnaire contains a total of 20 items. Considering the age of the students ( 13-14 years), there are only multiple choice questions to make them more easier to answer. Language of the items is simple and short. The twenty items include their personal information, their views on English, their views on Samacheer System and syllabus. Few questions are also about the evaluation scheme and grade
