demeaning responses from family members and friends. Not many of my family members and
friends really approved of nursing as a career choice in the beginning. I was always asked
“But...of all things why choose nursing”? This all had to do with none other than the image of
nurses. It took a long time before my family actually started respecting my career choice.
Nursing is known to be one of the most trust professions but one of less respected ones as well.
Nurses around the world do not get the same kind of respect they get in the United States. In

However, with the respect they
receive sometimes I wonder if that can really be changed.
Since we are all aware of the image of nursing we can do things to change it. I feel that
first and foremost we need to clearly be differentiated from nursing aids, nursing assistance and
CNA’s. This is important because many people just view them all the same and judge Registered
Nurses. We also need to nationalize scrubs so that people can tell us apart. In a hospital, a nurse
and CNA might wear different scrubs but in another hospital the color might be the other way
around. This also adds to people confusions between nurses and other nursing personnel’s. Also,
we are professionals so it’s also important that we present ourselves as professionals. Through
my clinical rotations, (other than Pediatrics) I have seen many RN’s wear cartoon printed
uniforms. This brings out an unprofessional image of nurses. People stop taking us seriously
when they see us in that kind of attire. Patients and their family members trust us with their life,
and by dressing in a professional way is the least we can do to assure them that they are in safe
