Career Essay: A Career As A Police Officer

I have been a Chatham County Deputy for almost 20 years and married to my wonderful wife for the last 17 years. I have three grown kids living on their own and two kids who still live at home. Since 1981, I have been a part of my family’s business and have managed many employees, one being our manager for over 27 years. In the 29 years I have been in law enforcement, I can honestly say it has not been for the money, but for my love of serving my community and the job. I want to be a Staff Sergeant at the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office because I am ready to accept a new challenge in my career. Being a Staff Sergeant means being a mentor, a supervisor and a leader. Under the leadership of Sheriff Webster, our agency has earned a reputation of excellence and professionalism among the public and other agencies. Each year we are recruiting more mature and better officers than ever before. Some of these deputies are; Det. Will Summers, Community Service Officer Luke Scala, Traffic Officer/DRE Justin Fyle and Deputy Brian Inman. All of these officers are excelling in their career paths. There are many reasons for this: they are all very driven, career oriented, and they take pride in their work. I know another reason is the guidance and knowledge I have been able to pass onto them through my own experiences in law enforcement as their supervisor and Field Training Officer. There are many things you can learn in rookie school or in a book, but there is a lot you cannot. I feel with my 29 years of law enforcement experience and dedication to the Chatham County Sheriff's Office, I have a lot to teach younger officers.
