4 Steps Career Exploration and Transition

Step 1: Understand Self - Anatomy of a Self Assessment:
A self assessment should include a look at your interests, values, personality, and skills. Here is an overview of the tools you can use to accomplish this.

Interest Inventories
The questions in an interest inventory ask about your likes and dislikes regarding various activities. The premise of this self assessment tool is that people who share similar interests will also enjoy the same type of work. Examples of interests are reading, running, playing golf, and knitting.

Value Inventories
Value inventories measure how important different values are to you. Examples of these values, which play an important role in one's job satisfaction, include autonomy, prestige, security, interpersonal relations, helping others, flexible work schedule, outdoor work, leisure time, and high salary.

Personality Inventories
A personality inventory looks at one's individual traits, motivational drives, needs, and attitudes. These are important in exploring a career which meets your interest, values and skills apart from personality.

Skills / Aptitude Assessment
In addition to determining what you're good at, a skills assessment also helps you figure out what you enjoy doing. The skills you use in your career should combine all characteristics. You can use the results of the skills assessment to make some changes by acquiring the skills you need for a particular career.

Roles Assessment
Based on your skills and aptitude assessment and your level of education you need to ascertain what will be your current role and what may become your future role.

Preferred Environments
This is equally important to know what environments are preferred to develop and pursue your career.

Developmental Needs
Based on the skills gap, competency gap we need to work on the Developmental Needs. This enables to map role based competencies with your developed skills and competencies

Your realities
This defines the ground realities like how much you would invest to pursue a career of your choice, how much effort you can put in, in what time frame you intend to acquire and above all how much time would you squeeze in from your normal routine to achieve all these.
