Three positions that interest me are the role of a Probation Officer, Juvenile Court Liaison, Rehabilitation Case Worker. Probation officers work with people who were convicted of crimes and sentenced to probation instead of incarceration. Probation and Parole Officer jobs require applicants to be U.S citizens, possess a valid driver’s license, and have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college. This degree must be in one of the following areas: Criminal justice, Social work, Psychology, Correctional services, Human services. Once hired, all probation/parole officers in must complete 160 hours of basic, state-mandated training during the first year of employment. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported the median…
The client Miguel Poor was referred to my office from Veteran Affairs. The Veteran Affairs Representative provided background information pertaining to the client. The client is unable to utilize any Benefits from the Veterans Affairs Office due to his discharge status; hence the referral to an out-of-network therapist. The client was dishonorably discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps in 2002 for disclosing his sexual orientation. The client reported to his commanding officers that he identified as gay and further identified as pre-op transgender.…
CASA or court appointed special advocates are an organization made up of ordinary citizens who volunteer to act as agents or spokespersons of the court, in cases involving abused and or neglected children. What is remarkable about this special organization is that CASA special advocates are selected by a judge to communicate on behalf of an abused or neglected child; something that many children involved in the system do not get to experience. The court appointed special advocates (CASA) was established after a Seattle court judge determined he was uncomfortable ruling on cases involving child abuse and neglect without appropriate and substantial information regarding these cases. And in 1977 the idea was developed that extensively trained community volunteers would advocate on behalf of the abused and or neglected children in his court.…
Miranda, you did wonderful in this situation. We have all gone through situations like this, and I think as long as we remain nurses situations like this will keep arising. Being an advocate for the patient will never be easy, but we as nurses must keep persevering just like you did. If we allow ourselves to be intimidated by doctors, then our pledge of being a patient advocate will be null. Masters (2017) states “the ability of nurses to think critically and make sound clinical judgments is essential to providing safe, competent, and quality care” (p. 216). You did exactly what was required of you as a nurse, and I believe if you had not been persistent to the point of getting a cardiologist on the case, the outcome would have been dire…
In my opinion, I do not think the victims movement has reached its full potential. I feel this way because in any government, law, or movement there is always room for improvements. With society changing at an alarming rate, and crime getting more violent , there is room for improvement. As crime worsens, more laws are created, which means changes in the criminal justice system has to be made. Crime just doesn 't affect the victim, everyone is affected, including society and the offender.…
In the above-mentioned case, the client is suing the counseling agency because he was physically assaulted by one of its employees. Wilbur, the plaintiff is suing XYZ counseling Agency (the defendant) because an employee called Chuck physically assaulted him during an anger management session; he holds the company responsible for the employee’s action.…
Next year with the grace of god, I will be attending Gordon College in Wenham Massachusetts. Gordon College is a private Christian institution about twenty minutes outside of Boston. At Gordon I will be studying pre-law and getting a Major in social work. I will be getting a major in social work while on the pre law track so that Hopefully one day I can become a family lawyer for the less fortunate. Being a social worker will have numerous unappealing aspects to it, but it’s something I feel strongly about because I feel…

Advocacy is important at all level of nursing. Advocacy is fundamental for the nursing profession's political power. With political power we can change policies, laws, and regulations and shape both the nursing practice and the work environment. As APRN we should advocate about issues that most affect our practice, our community, the public health, and the social justice. This involves knowing the laws and regulations that govern our practice acts and knowing the process of creating health policy.…

In November 2009, the Care Council produced ‘Social Work Career Pathway, A Discussion Paper’. This paper sets out a plan for developing a national career pathway for social workers in Wales, linked to a framework for post qualifying education and training. The proposed career pathway is intended to strengthen the retention of experienced social workers in frontline roles. It is also designed to ensure that social workers have the necessary knowledge and skills, and access to learning and support, to help them deliver high-quality services at all stages of their careers. The career pathway caters for newly-qualified social workers, as well as experienced practitioners, and the development of new roles such as the Consultant Social Worker. The career pathway discussion paper was the subject of a report to Care Council in January 2010. The paper was circulated widely to and discussed by stakeholders including with the National Strategic Advisory Partnership for Social Work Training, the Welsh Assembly Government, the Association of Directors of Social Services. Overall, there is support for the career pathway model and the opportunity it presents for raising the status of the social work profession and standards of practice. The proposed career pathway and associated Continuing Professional Education and Learning (CPEL) framework has been presented to the Social Work and Social Care Workforce Task Group established by the Deputy Minister for Social Services. The Task Group has agreed that the career pathway and CPEL framework should be recommended to the Deputy Minister when the Task Group reports in November 2010. - See more at: http://www.ccwales.org.uk/career-pathway-for-social-workers/#sthash.bSqsF8to.dpuf…
When you hear the word offender some have a reaction of fear and prejudice, thinking the worst of what this person has done. What about juvenile offenders that are not yet old enough to be held fully responsible for their actions, are they any less of a threat? Each state has their own predetermined statues for these young offenders but that does not change how they are seen by others. This is a population that I believe needs a voice to help them be seen in a light other than that of a criminal.…

In Hoefer (2006) notes that “Social workers must be involved in advocacy practice…If social workers do not act as advocates their policy ideas, values will not be well represented in policy-making”(p.21). I found this statement to be powerful because as social worker you have to know that in order to understand advocacy you have to be involved to fight for the cause. It is not okay just to just have feelings and emotions about something you feel should happen or should happen. You have to actively participate in what you believe is best for the client. Hoefer (2006) also notes that “Social Workers have an obligation to advocate for change in their communities” (p.30) (as cited in Csikai & Rozensky,1997, p.537) For example, if there is a program…
