As young adults attending high school and college there are students who know exactly what they want to be in life. Since birth they’ve known they wanted to be a teacher, businessmen or women, lawyers, etc. However amongst those overly prepared students there is another population that quite honestly has no idea as to what their profession will be. Throughout my collegiate career I would have considered myself part of the students that had their ten-year plan figured out, but realistically I wasn’t.…

This provides the platform for the counselor to build a tentative Life Portrait. According to Savickas (2011), “the counselors job is not to interpret the stories but rather help clients listen for wisdom they are authoring” about self, setting, and the script they aspire to live (p 181). Effective counselors first gain an understanding of what their client want to achieve. Every year millions of college students ' worldwide graduate from college in hopes of obtaining a position in their career field of choice; however a lot of these students do not have a plan of action to actually help them find their career and achieve their goals. So much emphasis is put on college graduates going out and finding a "job", but little focus is put on helping them find a "career." "A five year career plan is a road map that allows for progress tracking, and development of solutions or alternate courses of action (Crump, 2009)." From personal experience I have realized that the chances of achieving my personal and career goals are increased of I actually write them out as a plan. In this paper I will discuss my career goals and…
The article “Are You Deciding On Purpose” about the interview of author, speaker, and counselor Richard Leider really made me think about my life and what I want to do with myself. Leider brings up many great points in the interview and it was an eye opener for me after I finished reading the article. The first thing he mentions in the interview is how people are intimidated by all the choices we have now as career options. Nowadays, there are so many career paths to choose from that it overwhelms people and the decisions that they make. I think this is true for everyone and especially me. I thought about this for a while and I too do not have any idea what I want to do in my life. I have changed my mind many times about what I wanted to do as a career and I always thought about the money. After I finished reading the article, I realized that picking a career path is not all about the money. It’s about whether you enjoy what you are doing because you spend 60% of your entire life working. If I spent 60% of my entire life just working to pay the bills, I would be miserable by the time I’m retired because there wasn’t any satisfaction or fulfillment for me. I still don’t have any clue on what I want to do with my life but reading this article really changed my mind on a lot of things.…
All children are required to graduate high school, but pursuing higher education is only recommended. While high school curriculum is designed to prepare students for higher education, students learn essential career readiness skills while enrolling in higher education classes. Since students are not obliged to pursue higher education, many students who decide not to continue their education lack the skills necessary for future careers. While some schools hope to implement career readiness for either all their students or for only the students who do not wish to pursue college, other schools do not want to offer career readiness programs as they believe that it offers incentives for students not to attend college. Schools should require all students to take career readiness classes as…
Two branches of Technology are Engineering and business. An Engineer has the ability pursue a variety of occupations that he/she may focus on as a career. It is a business that is built for the aviation market, and is outsourced and sold to different companies such as, Continental Airlines and Jet Blue. The price range for a Boeing Aircraft model 777 lists from 200-250 million per…

“A garbage man.” As a 4-year old, if I would have been asked what I wanted to be when I grew up that would have been my response. Watching him come was the highlight of my week; I wanted to be just like him! Now, twelve years later, my mindset is significantly different. A job and the college required to get that job is looming closer than ever. As I have considered more prospects than dumping garbage for the rest of my life, I have decided I want to be a veterinarian. Many factors play into why I want to make this my career. Veterinarians experience a new challenge each and every day, have multiple areas to specialize and practice in, and can assist members of the community.…
Throughout High School and college I didn't know what career path that I wanted to take. As a college student, I just gained the opportunity to express myself, to spread my wings and to go after my dream only to realize that I didn’t know what it was that I wanted to pursue. The pressure and expectation from everybody did not help the cause either. So I decided that I am going to pursue engineering because it is a profession that I could finish and get a job after 4 years, plus I had friends I knew that were also doing engineering. I attended an engineering seminar along with my friends to attain a better understanding of the job and what it entails to achieve the goal. The classes I needed to take to be an engineer required a lot of math and physics, and once if I became and engineer I would need to apply those subjects in the job. I knew right then that engineering wasn't the right profession for me because I would…
For the start of my college career I am majoring in Criminal Justice. The reason I have chosen this major is because of the career path I intend on taking. The ideal career I would eventually like to end up in is working for the FBI as a special agent. FBI stands for The Federal Bureau of Investigations. The FBI’s motto is “Fidelity, Bravery, and Integrity.” The FBI’s mission is to defend and protect the United States, and uphold and enforce the laws of the United States of America. The reason I would love the opportunity to work for the FBI is because I want to be able to protect the community and citizens. I have always been extremely interested and fascinated by the criminal justice system and how it works.…
Almost a freshman in college, I only had vague ideas of what I wanted to do until I met people and learned more about myself. I knew I had some flexibility in my decisions; I could make mistakes as I’m only human. Not everyone knows what they want to do right away. That’s perfectly acceptable, figuring out life’s steps one at a time while enjoying the process is what matters. As I pursued pre-business, I learned more about myself and the two concentrations that appealed to me, which lead to my desire to tie in my interests to my career…
