Halamka is correct because had CareGroup not try to cut cost in using their own IT people for the job instead of hiring consultants for the Meditech installation, things might have been different. Experts that are specialized in their field are better trained for the job and can spot potential problems. Moreover, if Halamka had not brought in Cisco’s elite team of IT expert to fix the network problem, the negative impact would have been much greater for CareGroup and its patients.
Lesson #2: Do not let anyone individual in your IT group became the sole point of failure. Halamka is correct because CareGroup IT Department had one expert that understood the ins and outs of their network. However, the individual had left before the event occurred and took with him the knowledge and experience of working on CareGroup’s network. Without a replacement, the IT Department was left in a vulnerable position.
