(The story opens in Carles’ basement in his small bungalow near the Great Barrier Reef. Mardi Gras is in 3 weeks, and the water outside is rather chilly. Carles and Eustace are playing Dungeons and Pirates with a few of their friends)
Eustace:
You rolled a seven! You rolled a seven, Carles! You took down the captain!
All:
(Cheering)
Yay!!!
Carles:
Whelp, it’s 4 in the morning (yawns) probably time for y’all to head home.
Eustace:
See you tomorrow, bro. (Walking out)
Jimmy:
We back on tomorrow?
Carles:
You know it!
Scene Two
(Eustace dons his coat, pulling the hood over his head to hide his face from the frat sharks on their way home from a crazy party. The Pacific University campus is illuminated by a tall clock tower and red lights; …show more content…
a signal of last night’s fishball win.)
Kevin:
Dude!!!
Lit party!!!!!
Shmadington:
Yeah man!!!!! You ready for the next one!!!!! Appa Cappa Shmappa for life!
(all sharks cheer)
Chadington:
(caviar in hand) Hey! Who’s that peasant in the bushes?
Eustace:
(Emerges from shadows)
Fadington:
(gasp) A SEA URCHIN!
Bruce:
Is that... (dramatic pause) a Dungeons and Pirates die in his hand?
Kevin:
What a loser. (throws cup at Eustace which gets stuck in his spikes)
Scene Three
(Eustace heads back to Carles’ house, afraid to head any further. He attempts to pull the cup out of his spikes, to no avail. Carles is lying on his couch watching Pediatrician What. Eustace rings the doorbell.)
Carles:
Enter!
Eustace:
It’s me.
(Carles turns to look at Eustace and notices the cup.)
Carles:
Eustace, what happened?!?!?
Eustace:
I don’t want to talk about it.
Carles:
It was the sharks, wasn’t …show more content…
it?
Eustace:
I just wish we could be cool like them.
Carles:
But we’re uncool.. That’s just us
Eustace:
But aren’t you ready for a change? Aren’t you tired of living in the shadows? I want to be somebody, Carles!!! I don’t want to die alone, knowing that I spent my life as a loser…
Carles:
You aren’t alone, Eustace. You have me.
Eustace:
You aren’t enough! (storms out)
Scene Four
(Eustace stands alone outside realizing that he just lost his best friend, and still has an entire campus of possible shark encounters between there and his dorm. He slides down Carles’ door, and sits there for a good few hours, contemplating going back inside and apologizing, but he decides against it, deciding that he’s broken their bond too far for it to ever be fixed.)
Eustace:
(To himself) Well, I guess this is my life now. Just me, myself and I.
(Eustace throws his hood up again, this time walking as fast as he can back home. As the cold wind tears at his face, he feels a warmth break through the frigid air. He’s at the Appa Cappa Shmappa house. He sees the Kevin and the crew inside and knows what he has to do if he wants to save his social life.)
Scene Five
(Eustace enters the Appa Cappa Shmappa house. It seems as though the party is over, but Kevin and his crew sit on the living room couches surrounded by the absolutely trashed house. Doddington is the only one not sitting down. He is in the middle of trying to clean up the horrid mess.)
Eustace:
Ummm…. Hello?
Chadington
Ugh, it’s that urchin dude again.
Kevin:
What do you want?
Eustace:
How do I join... join your group… can I… how do I…?
Kevin:
For one, it’s sharks only. You’re way past the deadline anyways, but it’s not like we would accept you either way.
Dadington:
Kevin. It’s cold outside. Just let him stay for the night.
Kevin:
No, are you kidding me? That’s not even what he wants.
Eustace:
How much money do you want?
Chadington:
A bribe? How cute. Sorry, but our dad already has three yachts and 27 houses.
Smadington:
No he doesn’t. He has 28 houses.
Eustace:
How’s three million shells?
Kevin:
You’re in!
Bruce:
How do you even-?
Eustace:
Have all that money? I wrote The Lord of the Circles.
Bruce:
Those nerd books? You’re back out.
Eustace:
Four million?
Kevin:
Dude, you’re in. We can never have too much money.
Eustace:
AWESOME!!! (Cough) I mean- cool, dude.
Kevin:
Yeah, okay. Lose the cup.
(Eustace realizes that the cup is still stuck in his spikes. He pulls it out, almost along with his spike. The sun is coming up now.)
Kevin:
You need to look cooler.
Scene 6
(Eustace is back at his house. He pulls out his phone and dials Carles.)
Eustace:
H-hello. Is this Carles?
Carles:
Yeah, Eustace. It’s me, and whatever you’re going to say, I don’t care.
Eustace:
But I got in with the sharks. I’m cool now.
Carles:
Good for you. (Hanging up noise.)
(Eustace looks at himself deeply in the mirror. With shaky spikes, he lifts up a snapback and places it atop his head.)
Eustace:
(to himself) This is me now.
Scene Seven:
(Kevin and his crew drive up to Eustace’s place in a limo. He gets in and gets a bunch of high fives. There is inaudible cheering.)
(From here a montage of the next few weeks play out. Eustace goes to football games, lives in the house, has wild parties, flirts with Janice, and lives his now cool everyday life. Shot of the frat house. Pan up to sign that says “Mardi Gras party tonight”. A timelapse of them setting up the party that goes until the first people show up plays.)
Scene Eight A:
(Meanwhile… Carles is alone in his house like normal. He looks at a picture of him and Eustace, then at a shark disguise in the corner.)
Carles:
This is the right thing. (He puts on the shark costume, tears streaming down his face.)
Scene Eight B:
(The party is now in full force. People are wearing Mardi Gras colors and masks, and dancing like crazy. Carles in disguise is now standing by Eustace.)
Eustace:
Cool party, right?
Carles:
Yeah, it’s… interesting. (Marinara Sauce from the cocktail shrimp flies up onto Carles’ face.)
Eustace:
You’ve got a little something there. (He tries to wipe of the sauce but accidently knocks off Carles’ disguise.) Carles...?
(Carles’ eyes widen and he bolts out.)
Scene Nine
(Eustace heads over to Carles’ place to find out why he was there)
Eustace:
(Knocks on door)
Hey Carles… it’s me, Eustace… I just want to talk to you.
Carles:
(from inside)
Fine, come in, the door’s unlocked.
Eustace:
Why were you at the frat party?
Carles:
I just wanted to see if you were fitting in better and more having fun with the frat sharks than you did with me… Why did you just leave me for them like that?
Eustace:
I want to be cool, Carles. I want to have fun.
Carles:
Oh, I’m not fun? We never had any fun times over the years of our friendship?
Eustace:
No, Carles, I... That’s not what I meant.
Carles:
Eustace, you don’t even care about me anymore.
(Carles rips off his friendship bracelet)
Just go and have fun with your new little shark buddies. I guess they’re lot better friends than another sea urchin like you is.
Eustace:
No, please, I-
(Carles shoves him out and slams the door)
Scene Ten
(Carles is alone in front of his fireplace. He rips his copies of The Lord of the Circles books in the spine and throws them into the flames.)
(Carles, talking to himself) How could you do this to me and our friends, Eustace?
Scene Eleven:
(At the frat house, Eustace is hanging out with the frat sharks.)
Bruce:
So, urchin, are you even still friends with that weird guy… what’s his name?..... Charlie or something?
Eustace:
(slightly offended)
Well, Carles is mad at me but I still miss him and wish we were friends.
Kevin
Why do you care about that guy? You have to choose who you want to be friends with. The actually cool, fun guys, or the nerds who spend all of their time playing Dungeons and Pirates.
Janice:
Wow, Eustace, I never thought that you would want to go back to your little old friends. Why did I ever like you?
Eustace:
No, I didn’t mean that-
Kevin:
(Sigh)
Just go, Eustace.
We never really liked you that much anyway.
(Eustace tries to hide the tears forming in his eyes as he turns away and heads out the door.)
Scene Twelve
(Eustace goes over to Carles’ house, hoping it will go better than the last time he was there. It is getting dark outside.)
Eustace:
(He knocks) Hello?
(Carles opens the door and sighs)
Carles:
Oh, it’s you. (He sees Eustace’s tears and swollen eyes) Ok, fine. This is your last chance.
Eustace:
I’m so sorry Carles I didn’t mean it you are still my best friend and you were right we are uncool and we have fun together and I really really miss Dungeons and Dragons!!! (Eustace bursts into tears, still standing in the doorway.)
Carles:
Okay, maybe you should come inside… (Carles pulls him over to the sofa.) So, what happened?
Eustace:
You were right, I shouldn’t have left our friendship for the frat sharks! I’m so sorry!!! (Eustace keeps crying.)
Carles:
It’s ok. I forgive you. Why don’t we call Jimmy and our other friends to come over to play Dungeons and Pirates?
Eustace:
(He gives Carles a sad smile.) Ok, Carles. Thank you.
A few minutes later…
Jimmy:
(Coming in through the doorway, with a couple other friends behind him) Hello!
Carles:
I’ll go get the dice.
(A few hours later, now nighttime.)
Eustace:
Okay, we’ve been playing for a while. Why don’t we go outside for a bit?
Jimmy:
Sure, that’s a good idea!
Scene Thirteen
(Eustace, Carles, Jimmy, and their other friends are walking along the street. When they reach the streetlamp, they see several figures coming towards them.)
Carles:
Oh, no, it’s the frat sharks.
Eustace:
Don’t worry, I’ll deal with them. I know who my real friends are.
Kevin:
Hey, guys, we just want to say… We’re sorry. We shouldn’t have been rude.
Janice:
Yeah, we really miss you, Eustace. And your friends seem really fun and nice.
Eustace:
Oh, um.. Well, do you want to play Dungeons and Dragons with us
