“Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.” What the Roman poet Horace was saying was that when there is an obstacle in our way, our true colors will radiate. I could not agree more. When we as human beings feel passionate about achieving a goal, we may learn something new of ourselves, maybe a new trait that we did not know we possessed, when we reach new heights we did not know we could push ourselves towards. Challenges are similar to tests. Challenges are faced every day, but how we respond to them determines how strong we really are. Prime examples are superheroes and students that move dramatically.…

Drew Barrymore, one of the famous Hollywood actresses, once said “I want people to be blown away when I do what they don't expect. “, and she is not the only one who feels that way. I think a lot of people had have the same experience in their life. We never know what other people expect from us; however, our emotional state takes a role in the path of success when the outcome of our work goes above and beyond people imagination. We are able to blow away all those skeptical people around us, and the feeling of triumph gives us the power to go ahead and demonstrate to everybody that we can make the impossible possible. In the chapter, ”They Just Blew Me Away”, from The Last Lecture, the author, Professor Randy Pausch, discusses the amazing experience what he had with his students from Carnegie Mellon University and how he felt when his students blew him away. I, too, have had the experience of blowing away my computer programming teacher. These examples are important for all of those who strive to do their best. When we think we can't push anymore, we can push a little harder. When we think we're done, we're not. Our society has grown up under the impression that we aren't good enough, we're not strong enough, or we're not fast enough. So ever since I've heard that, I have pushed harder than I thought was possible, pushed past the limit. However at the same time it also personally impacts me because in the concentration camps they had to persevere, a lot. And I can relate a lot to perseverance because I have grown up swimming and the hard practices take a lot of perseverance. “Night” by Elie Wiesel teaches us all to persevere through the hard times and push ourselves past the limit. This is why I chose this…

I began browsing through a few colleges trying to decide the best one to suit my situation. I felt as though I needed a game plan or should I say a guideline as to what steps I needed to take to accomplish the goals I had in mind. First, I browsed schools and realized that the University of Phoenix catered to parents and working people. This was the break I had been looking for. Second, I had to make the decision of being an online student or a campus student. Online would not have worked for me caused I could easily be distracted at times with family life. I decided it would be best if I was in a setting away from home. Third, I had to decide the career path or study I was going to follow. Of course, I chose to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Business Management with a concentration in Finance. Last but not least I had to choose a method of payment and establish a way to pay for this college tuition. This were all steps in the decision-making process in…

In the end, I settled on Macalester College, a small liberal-arts school in Minnesota with a strong emphasis on internationalism and social action. It is certainly more mainstream than most of the schools that began my college search, but it is also intimate enough that I wouldn’t be able to slip through many cracks; it is located in a sizable metropolitan area where my learning would not be defined exclusively by campus boundaries; it is a place where hard questions are encouraged and expected; and its classes and dorms are well-represented by a diversity of backgrounds and perspectives. In hindsight, it was as good of a choice as any I could have made.…
