Spanish teacher that she loved and decided that she wanted my name to be as it is now. She told me she was trying to give me a very feminine name so that I wouldn’t get teased for having a boy’s name and made it easier for teachers and people to know I was a girl and easy to pronounce. My mom said there was a princess named Carmen de Sevilla in Spain where my family lived for about 15 years while my dad played professional basketball. We traveled around Spain in places like Madrid, Barcelona and Zaragoza. I love my name even though it seems kind of basic. The princess’ full name was Carmen de Sevilla. She is currently eighty years old. My mom said “ You were conceived in Spain and I carried you for seven months before I flew back to America because my dad was very sick so I wanted to be there for him and all of me and your dad’s family lived in Memphis so it made perfect sense to come back to America. After I gave birth to you and they asked what I was going to name you , I started thinking and I remembered that name and I knew that’s what I wanted to name you.” I then lived in Spain for five years after birth and then came to the United States to start school. My sister DeAndre told me” When I went to school in Spain I didn’t have a single friend.
I had a teacher named Donya Carmen and she made me feel good about myself. She used to compliment me all the time. Even though I didn’t have a single friend in school my age, my teacher was.” In elementary a lot of kids used to tease me about my name. They used to separate my name into two words like so “car- man”. When I was younger, I used to go home and cry and tell my mom about it, but she used to remind me and tell me how much she loved me and how she wouldn’t change my name for the world because it's special regardless of how many people have it. Over the time I learned to love my name because I don’t think I would’ve liked it any other way than what it is now. It's a part of me that I am very proud of and never will change because not only do I appreciate it, it also means a lot to the very people who named me. Whenever someone asks me my name and I tell them my name’s Carmen, they always tell me how beautiful and special my name is and I totally agree with them. Now whenever someone asks me about my name , I will no longer be ashamed of it because I know that there’s significance to
it.
