Stephen King is one of the most famous writers of the horror, science fiction, supernatural fiction, and suspense genre. Stephen King was born on September 21, 1947. He is still alive to this day and is 68 years old. When King was young, he was very involved in school extra-curricular activities. These activities included participating in school politics and also writing a weekly column for the school newspaper. After high school, King went to college at the University of Maine in 1970. He graduated college with a degree in English and looked for teaching opportunities soon after. He struggled finding a teaching job at first, but in 1971, he started his first teaching job at the high school level. He is also known for his use of symbols and metaphors. King has published fifty-four novels, seven under a pen name, and six non-fiction. He has also written around two hundred short stories. The novel that first made him famous was Carrie. This novel was published in April of 1974 and tells the story of a high-school girl who is rejected by her peers and scolded by her super religious mother. She soon learns of her supernatural powers and puts it to test at her senior prom. Carrie was later transformed into a movie in 1976 and stars Oscar winner, Sissy Spacek. King’s rise to stardom did not stop after his first novel. He would later go on to write many other famous works including The Shining, The Green Mile, Misery, and It among many others. The main character in The Shining struggles with alcoholism and slowly descends into a mad state. This character is symbolic for Stephen King and his struggle with alcohol.
