Lula Carson Smith was born in Columbus, Georgia McCullers was sick most of her childhood and was bedridden frequently. In these hard times she began to develop a passion of reading and writing.
1934 Carson McCuller went to New York city where she was pressured to studied piano at Julliard school of the arts by her mother. Once she arrived in New York however, she abandoned music to pursue her passion of literature. She started to take classes at Columbia University and New York University while balancing odd jobs.
December 1936 At age 19. McCuller had her first story, Wunderkind published and issued to Story Magazine when she was only 19 years old.
In 1940 McCullers big break came after she had finished
