The film I have selected to discuss for my final essay is “Casablanca” directed by Michael Curtiz. “Casablanca” is a romantic drama set during World War 2 in Vichy France, Morocco. It follows the imperishable love of its two main characters through its trials and tribulations at a time of great difficulty for everyone.
The movie opens with a narrator explaining life in “Casablanca” and the story of its residents. The narrator explains how refugees from all over the world are trying desperately to reach America in the search of a new life. He tells us that after a long difficult journey many refugees end up in Casablanca, in the hope of obtaining an exit visa and reaching Lisbon, and some do. However, many are not so fortunate and end up stuck, waiting for their luck to change, in Casablanca.

Through a series of unfortunate events and a bit of luck, Rick comes into the possession of two highly sought after letters of transit. These letters allow their holder to travel anywhere he or she wishes with no interference from anyone, and they are priceless to many of Casablanca’s refugee residents, but particularly Ilsa’s husband Victor Laslow. Who is a man on a mission to reach America and tell them of the Nazi’s cruel work. This leaves Rick stuck between a rock and a hard place because if Victor leaves Casablanca, so too does Ilsa. After a romantic but tearful reunion between Rick and his former love Ilsa, Rick is left with some thinking to do. And the decision he reaches is a most admirable one. This leads us to the final scene of “Casablanca”, which is the one I want to
