Case 1: Compare the Annual Reports of a Company with the Analyses in the Value Line.
The company that I choose is Hewlett-Packard. The reason for this is because the last 2 years I am mostly interested in technology and computers. According to the company's profile from Value Line Hewlett-Packard provides computing and imaging solutions and services to consumers and businesses. Moreover, Hewlett-Packard operates in six segments. These are: imaging and printing, personal systems, enterprise storage and servers, software, HP services and other.
The last year computer technology has grown too fast. The technology used has changed so much. Everyday new products came in the market. HP according to the Value Line analyses and the company's analyses is having a very good year. The sales for personal computer rise. And also the demand for good printing rise with an increase in shipped units.
At first I looked at the balance sheet in the Value line analyses. From my knowledge in the economics I understand that HP the last year (2006) was very good. The stock price had increase from the price that it was in 2005. The sales also went up from 2005 in 2006 and there are continuing to increase until now.
After looking at the analyses in the Value Line I searched in the company's site to find their analyses. The information which I found was almost the same with very small differences. And this happened because in the site the info was more recent that the one in the Value Line. So I also understand that the company is doing very well. In order to understand that lets look at same numbers. The total assets of the company in the year 2006 was $81,981 (in million) and in the year 2005 was $77,317. Here very easy we see the increase in total assets.
Also another important information that the Value Line give us is the rates that they give to each company. The company's financial strength which means, according to the definition of the Value Line, who strong is financially the company according to the Value Line. The best value is A++ and goes down to C. HP

A bit of a mixed indicator is total assets increased 16.5%. While over all this appears to be a strength, the total cash on hand increased 348%. So on the surface this may be indicative of strength but when digging deeper the cash/asset ratio increased from 1.3 to 2.6 which is not necessarily a good thing. The company has enough money to pay its immediate bills but it shows that more can be invested in increasing sales or even paid out in dividends.…

From this we can state that the company had relatively high EPS in 2004, 2005, and 2006 and then EPS dropped significantly in 2007. From 2007 to 2008 there was a significant growth in EPS. To analyze this further, we can note that there was not a substantial change in the number of shares outstanding, which indicates that the changes in EPS were caused mainly by the change in net income. While 2007 was a relatively poor year of income, the company has rebounded somewhat in 20008. Investors may see this company as a good place to invest as they are on an upswing in revenue, and will hopefully continue the trend of income growth.…

The Total Assets from the company represent a figure of 21,300 in the latest year, which represent a decrease of 3.82% from the previous year. The Current Assets sum up a total of 30.44% and 32.31% of the Total Assets as of January 2009 and January 2010 dates respectively, which represent a real growth, between the dates, of $142 to reach the $6,882. Part of this growth is due to the increase of 29.1% of the Cash and Cash Equivalents account, which in the later date is valued as $1,686; it also increase its participation in the total assets from 5.9% to 7.92% from one year to another. Also worthwhile mentioning is the significant reduction of the Accounts Receivable of 18.45% which varied $81 from the $439 figure we had in the FY08.…

The company that I have chosen to evaluate is Starbucks. Within the past three years Starbucks have maintained a net revenue in more than $9 billion dollars a year. In 2009 Starbucks net revenue was about $9.8 billion dollars and just in two years Starbucks has ended their 2011 year with a net revenue of $11.7 billion dollars making that this is the highest annual revenue. At Starbucks this was a 11 percent increase on a comparable 52-weeks basis. Over the past three years the operating margin has increased more than 9.1 percent in making the year of 2011 top out at a 14.8 percent at the end of the fiscal year. At Starbucks, this makes an increase in the operating income go from $562 million dollars to $1,728 million dollars, just in three years. Now, at the end of 2011the total annual assets at Starbucks would be $7.36 billion dollars and Starbucks total debt would be $2.97 billion dollars. With all of this information it tells me that Starbucks is in a good financial condition.…

The earlier analysis proved that Alpha’s return of assets (on a before-tax basis) significantly lower compared to Gamma. This is because Alpha does not have sufficient pure profit. This was also due to lower operating profit margin which tells us that Alpha is not generating sufficient return. To help Alpha, the possible solution to advise to Alpha is to identify the non-performing assets in the balance sheet and to study the financial statements to identify specific assets or groups of assets that are idle or not performing. This will help Alpha to match the income to the specific assets that produce the company income. The more useful the return on assets measure will be helping Alpha to improve profitability.…
