The Case Against Homework: A Fact Sheet
WHAT THE RESEARCH SAYS c c

According to a 2001 review of more than 120 studies of homework and its effects by Professor Harris Cooper of Duke University, the country’s leading homework researcher, and his updated 2006 review of an additional sixty studies, there is very little correlation between the amount of homework and achievement in elementary school and only a moderate correlation in middle school. Even in high school, “too much homework may diminish its effectiveness or even become counterproductive,” writes Cooper in his latest research review [Harris Cooper, The Battle Over Homework, second edition, page 26, and Does Homework Improve Academic Achievement? A Synthesis of the Research 1987–2003, the Review of Educational Research (Spring 2006)].
Many countries with the highest scoring students on achievement tests, such as Japan, Denmark, and the Czech Republic, have teachers who assign little homework. Meanwhile, countries such as Greece, Thailand, and Iran, where students have some of the worst average scores, have teachers who assign a lot of homework. American students do as much homework as their peers in other countries—if not more—but still manage only to score around the international average. [National Differences, Global Similarities: World Culture and the Future of Schooling by David P. Baker and Gerald K. LeTendre, Stanford
University Press, 2005]
Most teachers do not take courses specifically on homework during teacher training. In fact, research shows that the great majority are unaware of the research on the problems with homework [Stephen Aloia, “Teacher Assessment of Homework,” Academic Exchange Quarterly (Fall 2003)]. That’s why, as
Cooper told the authors of The Case Against Homework, when it comes to homework, “most teachers are winging it.”

And for things that are slightly more difficult than the normal tasks, it is more important to develop and adopt strategies so that you are able to do it on time and in a more efficient manner. Homework also falls in this category because it is quite difficult to do your homework timely because usually the quantum of homework is much more than the time available to the students. It is necessary for a person to want to get rid of a force controlling them. Also, it is commonly known that with growing up, homework should be expected in order to receive a full education. This meaning, every child for twelve years is supposed to make school a priority, and then get an occupation once they are an adult. While I accept this, every student should have the right to pursue other aptitudes which they will use late in life as a career. That being said, homework has caused a great problem in my day to day life.…

Since Roberto Nevilis introduced it to the world as a punishment in 1905, there have been many arguments to whether or not homework should be required. What initially started as punishment for kids who messed around in class has become a mandatory task that all students are required to do daily. I’m here to end that, I intend to show you that students should not be required to complete homework for a grade. Homework consumes too much time and leaves no space for extracurricular activities and causes health problems. On top of that, many students don’t even have the resources required to complete the homework. Despite these things, homework is still a graded assignment that if failed to complete, can drastically bring down a student's grade.…

Finally, homework is very demanding on kids. “In most U.S schools, homework has become more demanding and time-consuming (scope magazine, pages 20-21, lines 33-35). Studies have shown that most kids feel very stressed about schoolwork and homework. There is a lot of pressure to do well in school. Some kids feel like “if they don’t get help from their parents, they will be at a competitive disadvantage with classmates who do.” (scope magazine, pages 20-21, lines 69-72).…

Whether it be because the kids are not getting their homework done and getting in trouble, or them learning to cheat. Having homework can cause stress on the kids that have a lot to do. They might have sports to go alongside their piles of homework. They learn to cheat off friends in order to manage their homework. In the article it states that when kids have a lot to do and little time to do it, they find alternative ways to do things to get them done faster. The main way they usually end up finding is to cheat of friends. (“5 Reasons Kids Need Homework and 5 Reasons They Don't”). Not only is cheating a bad thing, it also leads to all kinds of bad habits like laziness and lying. And when they do not get caught, they feel rewarded for something they did not do, encouraging more cheating. Home work does not increase overall scores of each class. In the article it states, “Researchers at the University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education found in a 2012 study that math and science homework didn’t correlate to better student grades, but it did lead to better performances on standardized tests. And when homework is assigned, the help provided by parents often mitigated any of the positive effects of the work. Critics of this type of parental involvement say it can be counterproductive because parents may assume too great a role and/or may not fully understand the lessons being taught” (Graham). This research shows that having homework is counterproductive because the parents end up doing too much of the homework for the kids. Also, the study shows that the overall grades of the kids did not increase. The other side of this argument may argue that they increased scores on standardized tests, but that does not matter when their grades are still not increasing. Stress can be a major problem for tots at a young age. When it comes to stress, 70% of students said they were often stressed…

After a long day in school, two hours of swimming, and an hour of playing on an instrument, dinner time hits and we drown in homework. Seven hours of school alone is draining for a daily life of a student. On our way home we carry the weight of our backpacks as if we are carrying the weight of the world on our shoulders. Piling homework will only encourage students to put it off. All students procrastinate because they feel overwhelmed with the workload. It feels daunting to start work which is why homework can even lead to cheating which leads to poor study habits. Being prone to cheating and having an insufficient amount of study habits will only lead to a fixed mindset.…

Imagine a world where students come home from school and take the time to unwind and relax. It has been proven that almost three quarters of Canadian parents think that homework is a household stress. So why is homework still being assigned at schools, especially for younger grades? In recent years, the question of whether or not homework should be banned from elementary schools and limited to one hour per weekday in high school has been widely discussed. According to a Stanford Researcher, too much homework can negatively children. It takes their lives away from school, where family, friends, and social activities matter (Parker). The opponents of this educational approach argue that if students are not given homework to do, they will not become successful in the future. However, banning homework from elementary school and limiting it to one hour per weekday in high school is beneficial in terms of health, academics, and real world experiences.…

A common phrase among young adults in secondary education is that there are three parts to high school life: social life, grades, and sleep. Pick two. Clifton Parker, on a study by education scholar Denise Pope, states “spending too much time on homework mean[s] students [are] ‘not meeting their developmental needs or cultivating other critical life skills,’” Students [are] more likely to drop activities, not see friends or family, and not pursue hobbies they enjoy.” To achieve grades that fulfill collegiate ambitions, students must spend all of the time they may spend with family or friends on the homework that earns them points. Teachers often assume that a student’s overall productivity is defined by the amount of work completed in a night. Many end up assigning at least an hour of homework to assure themselves that the kids are learning. Real life productivity is defined by advancement and development of character or leadership. Through that lens, completing busywork is not productive. Once students reach the real world, they are underprepared and underdeveloped to face day to day challenges. In an interview, Christine Gross-Loh quotes Krista Kuru, Finnish Education Chief, describing the reasoning against this approach. She states “Academics isn't all kids need. Kids need so much more. School should be where we teach the meaning of life; where kids learn they are needed; where they can learn community skills.…
