Lincoln Municipal Airport’s current site was the result of a competition between three different potential airfield sites within Lincoln (McKEE, 2013). In April 1928, the site went to vote and 160 acres north of Capital Beach were purchased (McKEE, 2013). The voters also gave the go-ahead to build an airport (McKEE, 2013). In the same year, United Airlines made the first flight into the newly christened airport (McKEE, 2013).
The site was expanded to 2,750 acres after the Army Air Corps became involved in designating Lincoln as a mechanics school (McKEE, 2013). They fly CRJ-200’s into Minneapolis and CRJ-700’s flying into Atlanta for Delta Connection, and a mix of CRJ-700’s and Embraer 175’s into Chicago O’Hare for United Express (Flight Aware, 2018). Trans State Airlines Fly into Denver utilizing Embraer 145’s (Flight Aware, 2018). Express Jet was flying the LNK-ATL route however with the announcement that they will no longer be flying for Delta Connection, it appears that has impacted who the carrier is for that route (Yamanouchi, 2017). Their share of flights can be expected to return to zero in BTS’s statistics shortly.
Cargo Operations There are currently no cargo carriers that operate at the Lincoln Airport (Coffman Associates, Inc. , 2007). However, curiously the BTS reflects that there was 53,000 pounds of freight sent in 2017. The answer lies in that both Delta and United have small package cargo that runs a miniscule amount of shipments in and out of Lincoln (Coffman Associates, Inc. , 2007).
