Work Place Communication Seen Through Cassie’s Account
Communication skills in the work place are essential to a healthy work environment. Case study two focuses on the relationships, atmosphere, and ideals of the workplace. The article, “Navigating the Limits of a Smile”, written by Sarah J. Tracy, concentrates on a young American girl who adapts to her new job working on a cruise ship. This story portrays many work related communication theories and concepts that are used in everyday scenarios. When evaluating and analyzing this article, I found these three concepts to have been the most explored: personality at work, workplace relationships, and socialization of new members in organizations. Though each of these topics contains a variety of communication techniques, they all intertwine within one another because of how dependent they are on each other.
“Navigating the Limits of a Smile” is about a young girl named Cassie. The article begins with Cassie anticipating her new job as a cruise ship employee. When Cassie first starts her job, one of the coworkers gave her advice saying that once she started to work for the ship, she becomes its “public property”. For Cassie this means that she is the face, personality, and look of the cruise ship and that she is never off duty. As Cassie becomes more comfortable with working on the cruise ship, she begins to figure out the basics about what she needs to do and how she needs to act. She is told many times that personality is everything and that her attitude must always be positive and professional. Cassie became very close with her roommate and coworker, Sally. Cassie and Sally are both new to working on the ship, which instantly bonds them together. During the first few days Cassie worked on the ship, she started to look up to her coworker Blake as more of a superior figure instead of looking at him as an equal.
