BUSINESS CASES

Scientific Analysis of Business Cases

Case Study – is a very effective method in improving individual’s ability to analyze a situation, establish premises, arrive at valid conclusions, decide on courses of action and visualize consequences and results
• A case usually narrates the development of a situation over an extended period of time
• The analyst projects himself into the situation and visualizes it as though he is personally involved
• If the case involves two or more persons, the case analyst assumes in sequence the role of each person
• This is done only for better understanding of the human relations aspect but also to learn whether each person acts in the better manner while the situation was developing
• Accordingly, the case analysts will now reduce the likely impact any decision one party would have on the others
• The case analyst follows the narrated development by identifying and evaluating the more important factors and information needed for valid judgments
• Relevant data are carefully analyzed not only to determine whether there is a problem but also to find out the company’s position in the industry – what others are doing and how they are faring and the need for collective action for collective benefits
• As more cases are studied, a broad ‘exposure’ to different situations is ‘experienced’ by the student, thereby promoting the development of talent executive ability and self-confidence
Case study is most useful as an exercise in analysis and decision making
• A case is also very informative because it presents much information peculiar to business practices and conditions

Tips in Case Study Analysis Preparation

1. Read the assigned case thoroughly and completely • If possible, put the case aside for a period of time. • Then carefully re-read the case once or twice or even thrice • Try to get an accurate picture in your mind as to what is really

This doesn’t mean that the rest of the information is useless, only that based on that assignment you don’t need it. For later assignments you may have a different issue to focus on, so other information would then become relevant to you.…

The facts in this case are that Harvey Pierce ambushed and shot Robin Kerl and her fiancé David Jones in the parking lot of a Madison Wal-Mart where Kerl and Jones worked. Kerl was seriously injured in the shooting, and Jones was killed. Pierce, who was Kerl’s former boyfriend, then shot and killed himself. At the time of the shooting, Pierce was a work-release inmate at the Dane County jail who was employed at a nearby Arby’s restaurant operated by Dennis Rasmussen, INC. Pierce had left work without permission at the time of the attempted murder and murder/suicide. Kerl and Jones’ estate sued DRI and Arby’s, INC. As in pertinent to this appeal, the plaintiffs alleged that Arby’s is vicariously liable, as DRI’s negligent supervision of Pierce. The circuit court granted summary judgment in favor of Arby’s, concluding that there was no basis for vicarious liability. The court appeals affirmed.…

Each student will present a written case analysis which should be no more than 5 and no less than 4 double-spaced pages and is due on the date and time indicated in the course schedule (last page of this syllabus). While I focus on the content of your essay for my grading, clarity of presentation and organization is essential for me to follow your ideas. A good starting point is to look at the case discussion questions in Quiz 4. But your answer cannot be a series of answers to questions but must rather be an essay. Some of these questions will guide your case analysis and should be an aid to you in formulating your answer. Therefore, reading the case before the end of the third week so as to deal with these questions should help you do well in the case project. A good approach to the project is to make sure you include all the elements that I look for in my grading of your assignment.…

While in New York Ron Powell’s power sources were expert and referent. His expert power is evident by his ability to prove himself capable of being partner due to his skillset and knowledge within 9 years. He then excelled in that role and was asked to start his own office due to his leadership qualities and aggressive style. Ron had the technical expertise to not only perform his role exceedingly well, but to also lead his fellow employees. Although Ron had the expertise, his democratic leadership style allowed him to also possess the characteristics of referent power. Even with his ranking in the company, Ron still insisted on a first name basis relationship with his employees and encouraged them to be involved in decision-making. Empowering his employees increased their value in the company and gave them a sense that their outcomes and input were important. I can only imagine that would have increased the respect and loyalty each employee had for him. Along with his expertise he still was humble enough to care for his employees, which increased his referent power. Unfortunately, when things began to get shaky with the opening of the Dallas location a shift in Ron’s power went to more of the coercive source. He initially replaced nearly the entire staff once beginning in Dallas and again fired 12 more staff members, whom he had hired within one year, to minimize loss. Within the next few months this trend continued which left the staff feeling insecure and questioning his leadership abilities. The excessive use of coercive power decreased the performance of the employees and jeopardized the culture of the company.…

One of the biggest problems today is misinformation. People pass judgments towards others without being properly informed and I think that it is extremely important for students to be exposed to all different cultures. Since I have done my student teaching in the last few years I actually was surprised at how much the students cultures were influenced by the assignments. Although the cultural teachings are not extremely expressed in the curriculum it is up to the teacher to fit it in to the lessons. I feel that at any time that a teacher can incorporate the student’s home lives and cultural practices they should. This helps not only the other students to gain knowledge about other student’s cultures and values, but it also helps the teachers to understand things that they may not know about.…
