Medical assistants are cross-trained to perform administrative and clinical duties. There are two types of duties Administrative Duties that may include using computer applications, answering telephones, greeting patients, updating, and filing patient medical records, coding and filling out insurance forms scheduling appointments, arranging for hospital admissions and laboratory services, handling correspondence, billing, and bookkeeping. The name of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) was accepted by vote. Around 1959 the AAMA was incorporated in the State of Illinois as a not-for-profit professional organization. The national headquarters was opened in Chicago and the scholarship fund was started with a $200 contribution from Maxine Williams. It was later renamed the Maxine Williams Scholarship Fund. A Certification Committee was appointed to develop the AAMA Certification Program.in 1963 the first certification examinations were given in California, Kansas, and Florida and shortly after that Essentials of an Approved Educational Program for Medical Assistants was approved by the AMA Council on Medical Education and the AMA House of Delegates.
