Through the Pumped For Post Secondary mentorship program, I have been involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Toronto for 2 years. I have attended two Pumped For Post Secondary mentorship programs, one located at George Brown College and the other at the University of Toronto, St. George campus. These programs allowed me to learn multiple skills and available options for a student entering post-secondary education. I have gained through the presentations and mentors of Big Brothers and Big Sisters the ability to budget, write a decent resume, properly conduct an interview and stress management. I was encouraged to speak with others and now am able to confidently speak my mind and interact with others more easily than before. This is a massive step from me, because I am a shy person and would get scared of new people as they were strangers to me. Thanks to this program I can now talk to people without the fear of messing up. …show more content…
As well, just by interacting with the campuses, I gained a familiarity with universities and colleges; making the idea of attending one not longer scary but exciting.
I learned that although post secondary can be stressful and difficult, there are always people there to support you whenever you ask for help. High school to post secondary is an exciting transition that can be daunting from its newness but it does not have to be terrifying. The mentors being open and welcoming reinforced this fact by sharing their experiences and knowledge. This make me love every person I met; I loved hearing their unique stories and
knowledge.
By being involved with the Pumped for Post Secondary from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Toronto, I was able to confidently make my decisions about choosing, applying and responding to universities. Especially when it came to deciding to apply to the University of Toronto as it was not always on my radar. By the constant exposure to the campus, its department and faculty, I decided to apply to University of Toronto for their Life Science program. This agency helped me build up my confidence in myself, in my decisions and in others; something I am thankful for and know I will carry the lessons and skills I have learned with me to more life situations.
2. Please describe below, in point form, your extracurricular activities
Some of my extracurricular activities include
• The Royal Canadian Air Cadets
• Knitting scarves, then donating them to Street Knit
• Minga Social Justice Club
• Babysitting
• Archery
• Aiding with the International Baccalaureate program entrance interviews
3. Briefly outline your career or professional goals
One of my professional goals include becoming certified bilingual in English and French. I wish to fluently speak and study in French because it is important to me to hold on to my second language. I plan to achieve this goal by studying at the University of Ottawa in French immersion while completing their biomedical science program.
My career goal of becoming a doctor of medicine is the reason why I decided to apply for University of Ottawa's biomedical program. This is because I have a fascination with medicine and helping people. There, I hope to delve deeper into the field of medical science and find my specific interests in the field. Although I am unsure of where in medicine I would like to study, I hope to help people in some form through medicine.
